70|"... Life Sucks..."

<Chris's POV>

Two-Bit is planning on coming with Soda, Pony, and I to go see Leala with Darry to tell her the news. We all want to make her comfortable with us because we like her and she is good for Darry. The first step is to include her in all our news and activities. We pick Two-But up from Lena and Steve's new place and he jumps in the passenger seat with little Henry asleep in his arms.

The ride to see Leala is short and quiet. Apparently, Henry sleeps like the dead and rarely woke up during the night. I congratulated him about that and Soda just commented, "some people get all the luck."

Upon arriving at Leala's small house Henry open's his eyes revealing the beautiful crystal blue. Two-But jumps out of the truck with Henry and I warn him to be careful. "Oh don't get your panties in a bunch," he exclaims. I roll my eyes and pass Josh to Soda. Pony and Darry lead the way to the front door and Darry gets the honor of knocking on the door softly. After only a few seconds, the door opens revealing Leala who is in a gray tank top and jeans. She looks around at us shyly. "Hey guys, what's..." Her voice trails off when she sees the baby in Two-Bit's arms. "Um, why don't you come inside, I have some Coke we can drink," Leala offers as she opens the door wider.

Her home is small and when I walk in I see there is a minuscule kitchen attached to a small living room with a couch and a cushioned chair, along with a coffee table. A few feet away are two doorways, one leading to a bedroom and the other, a bathroom. Leala rushes to the kitchen and grabs a hand full of glass Coke bottles. I thank her as she places them on the table. There is a radio in the corner of the small sitting room playing The Rolling Stones, Time Is On My Side, quietly. I tap my foot along to the beat in anticipation. Soda takes my hand as he places Josh on the floor by his feet. Pony, Soda, and I sit on the couch and Two-Bit rests in the chair with Henry in his arms. Darry stands leaning against the doorframe leading into the bedroom. Leala is standing next to Two-Bit. Her gaze is locked on the blue eyed baby, her eyes glossy. "So this is new," Leala states. Kieth chuckles.

"Yes I've noticed," he says happily.

"And his name is?"

"Henry Robert Matthews," Two-Bit says proudly. Leala smiles.

"He looks like a friend of mine, I haven't talked to her in months," Leala exclaims, "who's the mother?" Two-Bit looks from Henry to Leala.

"A girl named Kaya, they have the same-"

"Hair and face," Leala says smiling. Two-Bit smirks.

"You know her?" He asks curiously. Lena smiles widely.

"Know her? We were best friends up until a few months ago, her parents forced her to move out to Vermont, I lost all contact with her. I didn't know why they made her leave until now. Her family was strict, must not of liked her being pregnant," Leala explains, "is she back in Tulsa? How is she?" Leala asks. My smiles fades and I watch as Two-Bit gulps nervously.

"Leala, Kaya died two weeks ago giving birth to Henry," Two-Bit explains. Leala stops smiling and the shine in her eyes fades away. She turns slowly on her heel and walks into the bathroom. Quickly, I jump up from the couch and rush into the bathroom after her, closing the door behind me. Leala is leaning over the sink, her hands grasping the sides of it tightly, all of her muscles flexing. Stray pieces of hair that do not reach her messy bun fall into her face. I watch as the tears slowly make an appearance and fall down her tan cheeks.

"Leala, I'm so sorry, if there is anything I can do, just tell me," I inform her. She breathes heavily over the sink.

"We always said that I would help her raise her children when she had them," she tells me in a scratchy voice.

"You will still be involved in Henry's life, don't worry," I tell her hopefully. Leala only shakes her head in response.

"No, you don't get it. We were best friends, so she knew. She knew that I couldn't have my own children. She said I could help raise hers with her. She promised!" Leala ends up yelling. Moving towards the girl with outstretched arms, I hug her tall frame in hopes that it will somehow comfort her. It all makes sense now. How when we went out to dinner and we asked her if she was going to have kids she became upset. The only way she believes she can have children is if Kaya brought them into the world for her.

"Look Leala, I'm not stupid, I know you can't have children, you are infertile, you just learned your best friend is dead, and you just met her child and I know that this is all sucking so horribly right now, but you have to trust me as a person who has gone through more shit than you can imagine, that it will be okay," I tell the crying girl as I crush her in a hug. "We have all had our share of unlucky moments. I was sexually abused by my father and my mother died when I was young, my husband of a week was sent off into Vietnam, I get it, life sucks, but you will be okay," I promise her. Leala pulls away from the hug and looks at me with teary eyes. She manages to smile slightly, causing me to grin. I take her hand and squeeze it.

"Sexually abused?" Leala asks. I close my eyes and shudder before nodding. When I open my eyes again I see Leala is just staring at me with big doe eyes.

"Let's go say hi to your best friends son," I tell her happily. Leala nods frantically and I open the bathroom door, revealing Soda who is standing with tear filled eyes and clenched fists. I stop in my tracks.

"Sexually abused Chris?" Soda asks me, his voice hoarse and cracking. I widen my eyes and realize what I have done. I never told Soda about what my father did to me.

"Soda I-"

"These are some thin walls," Soda mutters before leaving all of us and stomping out of the front door. I do not try to chase him. I know that he wants to be with anyone except for me.

-Kaya gets pregnant cause of Two-Bit
-Her parents kick her out and send her to Vermont
-She never tells her best friend Leala that she is pregnant
-She comes back in her 9th month of pregnancy and dies during childbirth
-Henry is left on Two's door step
-Two tells the gang and goes to tell Leala
-Leala looks at the baby and realizes soon that this is Kayas baby
-She asks if Kaya is back in town
-Two informs her that Kaya has died giving birth
-Leala tells Chris that she is unable to have children
-Chris tells Leala she was sexually abused
-Everyone hears their conversation because the walls are thin
-Soda runs off
