After Sam got back, I was allowed to stand and go to the bathroom. The stitches on my side ached and it was sort of hard to walk, but I didn't want help. I could do it on my own. I thought long and hard on a thought I was thinking. The guys won't like it, but I really want it. I've been running around with them for a long time. Nearly 2 months. It wasn't long on its own, but it felt like a year. They were wild and outgoing, and seemed like they weren't ever gonna a stop. I needed a break.
"Hey, guys." I said, breaking the uncomfortable silence.
"Yeah?" Dean asked and Sam had the same question in his eyes.
"Do you think I could get a ride somewhere? I mean, stealing a car isn't really my thing." I shrugged, hoping they wouldn't question it.
But of course, I was wrong, "Why?" Sam asked.
"Just going on holiday." I took a drink of my soda, "Me time, you know."
"For how long?" Sam asked again.
"I dunno. A while." I couldn't think of another answer.
"Where to?" Dean finally spoke up.
I finished off my burger, "Arizona."
Dean looking away knowingly, but Sam was still confused, "What's in Arizona that would make you want to take a break?"
"Well, my brothers, for a start." I sassed.
"You have brothers?" Dean joked, "How'd you ever get away?"
"Well, it was pretty easy. Not all of us have good relationships with our family." I sucked at the straw, and emptied it.
"Yeah, we can give you a lift."
"You better stay in touch, though." Sam added.
"It's a deal." I threw the wrapper of my burger to the side.
We left the next day, which was good cause I didn't feel like a day's travel in a car in my current condition. I fell asleep, which was typical, about two hours in and I popped a stitch, which delayed us for about an hour. But after that, I was home free. I looked up my brother, David, the baby of the family. He was still living in the same place as when I'd last saw him a few years ago. I called, and he was cool with me dropping by for a while.
But things with the guys went sour when we entered the small town, "So, what's David like?" Sam asked.
"He's a good guy. Why?" I sat up and put on my jacket.
"Cause if we're meeting him, don't you think we ought to know something about him?" He said, as if it was part of the plan.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Since when are you meeting him?" This was definitely not part of the plan.
"Since always. You think we're just gonna drop you on some guy and leave you to it?" Dean butted in.
"Some guy? My brother that I've known since he was born, you mean?" I felt defensive. David doesn't need this.
"Yeah, but you haven't seen him in how long?" Dean pressed. I didn't say anything, "No, we're meeting him, or I'm turning this car around."
Not worth a waste of a ride though, "Okay! Geez, just act... normal. Alright?" I huffed.
"Of course, who do you think we are?" Sam suggested.
"I think you're dangerous." I said, leaning on the front seat, careful not to hurt myself.
"Well, you're right there." Dean said with moxie. "This the place?" He asked as he slowed to a stop in front of David's house.
"Yeah," I said and stepped out of the car. The others followed.
Sam left out a whistle. "Yeah, right?" Dean said. It was a very nice place. David and my other brother, Jerry, were relatively wealthy from their portion of the inheritance from my dad.
"What can I say, I ran from a good thing." I said and stepped slightly to the front door. But I was too late, and the door opened and out came David. He was tall, very tall, about Sam's height, sandy blonde, which he's grown out since the last time I'd seen him, and had developed a sturdy frame.
"Kay!" He said and ran towards me, looking for a hug.
"Whoa, ease up. She's still recovering." Sam just in time.
"Oh, sorry. What from?" He stopped in his tracks.
"Well," I lifted my shirt to reveal the big cut.
"Oh, geez. What happened?" He gave a look of concern.
"Got between some dogs. I'm alright, don't worry." I adjusted again, "David, this is Sam and Dean." I introduced.
"Hey," Sam said.
"Hey. Why don't you come inside for a beer or something?" David offered way too freely.
"No, I'm su-"
"We'd love to." Dean cut me off, gave me a sassy smile, and proceeded to walk up the stone path and into the house. Sam gave me a sorry look and followed him in. David helped me up the stairs and I took a seat on the leather couch. David grabbed the guys a beer and, knowing me too well, got me a juice pouch, "Seriously?" Dean questioned me.
I poked the straw in the pouch, "What?"
He just shook his head and turned his attention to David, "So, you're Kay's brother." He said it matter-of-factly.
"Yes, and I assume you're Kay's boyfriend?" he asked in return.
"Wh- No!" Dean went a little red and I broke into a fit of laughter, well as much as I could muster.
"No, just a friend." I said when I'd finally calmed down, smile still on my face. Dean looked ungrateful; I shrugged.
"Pretty sweet place." Sam commented.
"Yeah, right? Sucks to clean though." David criticized.
"You said brothers?" Dean asked me.
"Yeah, where is Jerry?" I asked David.
"I don't know. Should be back soon. I think he was taking Cindy out for lunch." He mentioned.
"Oh, they're still together?"
"Yeah. Weird, huh?"
"For Jerry, yeah." I said sarcastically, David laughed at that.
We talked about mindless and simple things for about thirty minutes more. Sam and Dean were apparently used car salesmen and were on vacation when I kindly asked them for a lift. David bought into it pretty nicely. But by the end of the half hour, they were getting bored and decided to leave.
"Well, see you guys around." I said walking over to them at the door, "You be careful." I gave Sam a hug around the middle, he didn't seem that into it, but I didn't care. "You better keep care of each other." I said as I gave Dean a bigger goodbye hug. He accepted it better and hugged me back pretty hard, still careful of my injuries.
"Keep in touch." Dean commanded as he walked down the stairs and hopped into his car, Sam following behind.
"You too." I said as they drove away, down the street, and around a corner.
