. . . . .

James' POV:

There was an immediate uproar. Lily shrieked and overturned the small foldable desk in front of her, Moony sat there in shock, while Padfoot leaped up and jumped into Marlene's arms.

Adelaide was the only one moving, muttering under her breath in a ghastly tone and shivering every couple minutes. She wasn't the only one who felt it. It seemed like the ice was spreading, and filling the room too, making us all shiver.

"HURRY!" Adelaide screamed at us, making us all jump. Lily rummaged in the drawers and threw us all gloves, just in case. I pulled my shirt tighter around me, trying to keep warm.

Moony flipped through Lily's book desperately while Padfoot helped fill the other needles. We needed at least 3 needles.

"Ready?" Lily exhaled, pursing her lips. I couldn't even imagine how hard this must've been for her. Her best friend was about to die from something unknown, her other best friends were desperately trying to help, Alice was nowhere to be found, and I just made it worse by being here.

I nodded curtly and I found a place the ice hadn't found yet, her left forearm. Using the gloves, she quickly turned the arm over and I injected it in, wincing and throwing away the needle.

The ice stopped crackling for a second before hissing angrily, and starting to spread quicker.

"It must have sensed it. It's trying to spread before the potion can destroy it," Lily hissed. Marlene shoved another needle into Teresa, desperately trying to stop the terrible ice.

"What is it?!" Adelaide shrieked in frustration, tearing through the book.

Sirius exhaled. He normally didn't have these situations. Last year, he would've been partying and getting a new girlfriend. Or pranking and nicking from the kitchens. Definitely not stuck in here at 1 or 2 in the morning, trying to rescue a vampire from dying, trying to extract a bound soul that was possessing and suffocating her, and dealing with a major burn wound. But at least he had Marlene. And Marlene would make him go through his, either with or without her.

Teresa sat up, gasping, but her eyes were the same: haunted, dark, empty. She gasped and her body shuddered violently once, before her eyes rolled back into her head and she collapsed again.

"Teresa!" Lily cried out, before injecting another stream of the potion into her.

"Is it working?" Marlene asked, studying the ice, wrinkling her nose.

"I DON'T KNOW!" Adelaide shrieked, rushing over to her workplace and trying to see what she had added. "Madam Pomfrey taught me last year for a Healer but I don't know how to cure this. I created a potion that was supposed to speed up her healing. Her vampire body should already be mending itself, but I had a theory -" she glanced at me and quickly explained it.

"It's okay," hushed Lily, rushing over to comfort Adelaide.

"What am I supposed to do?" Adelaide wailed, clutching her arms.

"First," Lily commanded, "we need to calm down. Wouldn't Teresa take charge if she was here?"

Everyone nodded grimly.

"Alright," she calmed down, "Then, we try to help her. Marlene, you look through any books in here or anything. Madam Pomfrey is still down there, helping with all the wounded and looking after them. People are sleeping by now. It's nearly 2 in the morning. Adelaide and Remus, you two see if you can stop the ice from spreading. Sirius, you and James tell me more about the male, and I'll see if I can extract him first."

Everyone nodded agreeably, and set quickly off to do their jobs.

I turned to look at everyone in awe, all working in the middle of the night to help their friend. Adelaide and Remus were gingerly touching the ice with gloves, trying some simple spells on them. Marlene was flipping desperately through books, chucking them backwards and stacking them all together.

"Alright," Lily said, her hands on her hips. "Spill," she ordered,

And we told everything, everything, even all our suspicions. The only thing I had to keep from blurting out was, "He was hitting on you!"

Lily stayed silent throughout everything before she said, "Is Dumbledore here?" Sirius glanced at me and said, "No. He got summoned to the Ministry urgently. He's not here anymore." She exhaled sharply and folded her arms, a hand pressed to her temple before straightening up again.

"Lily?" I asked cautiously. She glanced at me and gave a feeble smile that slid off quickly. I hated seeing her like this, taking care of everybody but herself. "Sirius," Lily turned to him. "What?" he asked, running a hand through his hair anxiously, looking over at Marlene. "Go to the Heads dorm, you know where it is, you've tried pranking James and me enough. And just saying, I found all the things you put in my room. Exploding pillows? Really, Sirius."

Sirius laughed shortly but said, "Figures that you would figure it out. How'd you know? Magic?"

"No," she retorted, rolling her eyes, "I have a sister who hates me. She tried enough. You learn eventually."

"Your sister?" he inquired, raising his eyebrows.

"Yes," she said stiffly. It seemed as if Sirius had landed on a touchy subject.

"Anyway," she recovered quickly, "Sirius go into the Head dorm, you'll find either James' or my owl. Yours' is named Griffin, right?" looking at me.

"Er-yeah," I said quickly. She raised an eyebrow but said, "Grab some parchment and send a letter to Dumbledore, telling the situation. Please make it precise. And then find Professors Pomfrey and McGonagall, and bring them up here."

"On it," Sirius nodded and dashed out of the room.

"Lily," I started and she turned to me.

"What?"

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," her voice quivered, "-actually I'm not. My best friend is about to die and is suffocating, my other best friend is nowhere to be seen, Sirius got a bad burn, and so much more situations."

"You always sacrifice for other people, your time, energy, sleep, everything. Maybe it's time to have other people sacrifice for you."

Lily gave me a sad smile and said, almost wistfully, "I've had people sacrifice for me. Too many and far too much. And the cost of that was terrible. I've learned my lesson."

She slid against the wall and sat down, me joining her. Hesitantly, I placed my hand over hers. She didn't resist or slap me. Instead she leaned into my side and sighed.

It was 2 AM in the morning, Marlene was scurrying around and Remus and Adelaide were murmuring in hushed tones. There were yelps and sounds of pain from the other hospital beds.

Yet somehow, it was almost peaceful.
