Lily's POV:
I walked into DADA class, the next day, eager to learn a Patronus Charm. I sat my bag next to Adelaide who was doodling pictures of little fluffy balls that looked rather like a squat, fluffy flobberworm. Teresa was up at the desk talking to the teacher, both looking rather serious.
I heard snippets of their conversation.
"So it's true then, is it?" Teresa demanded, placing her hands on her hips. Professor Brie regarded her with a cold look and said dismissively, "I have no idea what you are gathering, Ms. Blake." Teresa's eyes burned with cold hate and fire. "You know exactly what I'm talking about!" she shouted, slamming her fist down onto the table. Everybody jumped, startled. "The evidence is shown, I don't even know why you're bothering!" she said furiously, though quieter. "We will talk later, Ms. Blake," Professor Brie said quickly, flicking his wand.
Teresa stalked angrily back to her seat, and seating herself in it, folding her arms. She said sweetly, "Why don't you start class, Professor-. Oh wait, oops! Professor Brie isn't even your real name, right?" The professor said stiffly, "Detention, Blake! And see me after class please."
He talked quickly about the incantation before showing us again. Then we set off to practice it for awhile. James and Sirius rushed in right before he dismissed the class to go work on the Patronus Charm. I was questioning where Remus was, but then realized that tonight was a full moon.
I had figured it out rather quickly, I think in our 5th year. I had always mused about Remus disappearing mysteriously around the full moon, and how sick and terrible he looked afterwards, pale and scratched up.
"Where were you?" I hissed from the side of my mouth, my brows furrowing together. "Doing stuff," James said quickly. "Is 'stuff' called a girl?" I retorted, frowning. "No," he answered honestly. I frowned but said, "Hurry up! Apparently you're the only person I have to do this with since, ahem, Teresa and Adelaide decided to ditch me. And Sirius just raced to that Ravenclaw girl, Eliza Wevenhooper."
James beamed and said airily, "Waiting for me, then?" I smacked his arm and poked his arm with my wand leaving a small dent. "Hey!" he exclaimed, rubbing the part where I poked him. "You go first," I said firmly, looking at him. "You go first," he said kindly. I sighed, "I can't do it." I closed my eyes and thought of the first time I went to Diagon Alley and gazing at all the shops. I took a deep breath and said, "Expecto Patronum!" A tiny wisp of silver and white trailed out of my wand then promptly disappeared. I frowned and tilted my head back so I saw the ceiling.
"Here," James offered a piece of Honeydukes chocolate to me. "Thank you," I said gratefully, popping it in my mouth. "So the first thing you should probably get right, is the wand movement, " James started, looking straight at me. I laughed lightly.
He said, "Ready?" I nodded solemnly and faced him. I closed my eyes, waved my wand and said, "Expecto Patronum." He beamed at me, but said, "Here." He came around behind me, grasped my hand gently, which sent small tingles up my arm, and led my arm. "Try now," he offered. I squeezed my eyes shut and didn't think of a happy memory voluntarily. Instead I just let my mind go, finding its own memory.
I could almost see it. It was like I was in a galaxy, looking for one thing out of everything else. But I didn't see any memories. I frowned inwardly. Was I demented? Then I realized, that this was probably what I was focusing on, the fact that James Potter was grasping my hand and encouraging me with his other hand on my shoulder, resting on my hair. I gasped and almost dropped my wand, before James' hand shot out and caught it.
