"Wake up sunshine!" This is how I wake up in the mornings with Ben. He's always been a morning person. And obviously I never was. To be honest, I don't know how I'm even able to get myself up in the mornings. But with Ben, he's obviously the answer. And as I raise my head from the bed, he throws a pillow at me.
"You Know, you've known me all your life, you know that I'm not a morning person, and yet still, you continue to wake me up in an abusive, extremely annoying manor. Why is that?" I asked him in my usual grumpy morning voice and he brushed it off like he always does.
"It's called tough love. Now come on, get up. " He swipes the covers off of me, pulls me up off of the bed, and practically drags me to the bathroom as I rub the sleep out of my eyes.
When I come out of the shower, I smell Ben's famous peppermint pancakes... I go straight downstairs and track the smell all the way to the kitchen.
"That was fast." He greeted me with two perfectly golden flapjacks drenched in syrup with a slice of margarine slapped on the top in one hand and a spatula in the other.
"Thank you." Without even taking the plate from his hand I immediately grabbed a fork and dug into the pancake. And as soon as the warm butter touched my tongue, I melted. That one bite took me back to the days when we were kids. It was his mom's recipe. And we loved when she cooked. Which was like all the time. She was a wonderful person. Like a mother to me. I missed her a lot. We all did.
As soon as I took the plate to the table, he came and sat down right after me. And right after that, my mother walked outside of her room. I was still mad at her for the whole Mark situation. But I'll get over it soon.
I got dressed, then we headed into my car and drove off to school. And as we got out of the car, I spotted a familiar group of people at the entrance.
"That's them!" I grabbed Ben's arm practically dragging him to meet my new friends. As we got up to them, I let go of him.
"Hey, guys. This is my best friend Bennie!"
"It's Ben, but she calls me Bennie." he jokingly scoffed.
"Ben, this is Cyle, Jenn, Macey, Cole, Danny, Riley, and Marcus." I looked at Marcus and stared into his big dreamy sky blue eyes. We were staring at each other for a good four minutes until Macey interrupted us. And that's when I remembered that we had to talk.
"Umm Sam can I talk to you for a second?"
"Yeah sure, Ben I'll catch up with you later." After they all left and were far enough that they couldn't hear us, she started.
"I don't know if you didn't notice it yet but Marcus and I aren't as close as we are with the others."
"No kidding." I said under my breath but she still heard me.
"Good so you realized. We...well... we used to secretly date. Yeah. Last summer." When I heard this I was surprised but kind of not surprised. I could tell the tension between them was there, but I couldn't really put my finger on what caused it.
"Nobody knew," she continued. "and it wasn't bad at first but then he started to change. He got angry about almost everything. He would call me names and make me feel so bad about myself. Until... I just couldn't take it anymore. I was in a very dark place after we broke up. And then I met Cyle. And he taught me how to love again. He taught me how to love myself, again. I never forgave Marcus after that. And we haven't talked since." I just stood there and listened to her story. I was so in awe that we were talking about the same person. Marcus Andrews. Part of me didn't believe her, but who would make up something like that?
"I'm telling you this because I already see you and him dating later on in the very near future and I want you to know what you're getting into and who you're getting into it with. I'm not telling you not to talk to him, I'm just warning you. And you don't have to listen to me. Just know that if you need me I'll be here for you anytime." I just gave her a big hug. I couldn't really say anything about what I just heard. All I could really say was, "Thank you for telling me this." And we walked to class.
I can't believe he did those things to her. I have to confront him about it.
