Chapter 8

Addison’s POV

“Wait,” I said, stopping at a spot under a tree. Sarah and I have been walking around Hyde Park, talking endlessly about different things when my phone beeped from my pocket.

“’Kay,” Sarah replied and she sat down on the grass. I read the text message I received and a smile slowly crept onto my face.

“What?” Sarah asked and I glanced up at her.

“Nathan…” I mumbled and she grabbed my phone from me. “Hey!” I protested and she threw it back to me when she realized there was nothing more than a simple “Hi” in the text.

“He’s so into you,” she stated for what seemed like the millionth time and I gave her a disapproving look. He’s Nathan Sykes. He can have any girl he wants. There’s a 0.00001% chance that he’d like me.

“No, not this again,” I groaned. Throughout high school Sarah had always thought that she was a cockblock. She always thought that any guy that talked to the shy girl (which is me) was getting hit on, and she actually felt bad that I never had a boyfriend during high school because she believes it’s her fault. “I know what you’re thinking, Sarah. You were there that night; you aren’t a cockblock,” I added and she made a face.

“Whatever. But this time I’m not getting in the way of you and Nathan,” She replied.

“You’re not getting in the way of anything—I don’t know anything! Why don’t you ask him?” I argued and she grinned. I suddenly regretted what I'd said.

“Okay, I will,”

“What? No! Don’t do that!” I countered, but it was too late. She grabbed my phone and dialed Nathan’s number. The volume was pretty loud, and it had gone quiet around us for some reason, so I was able to hear the conversation.

“Hey Addi!” Nathan greeted. Aw, he sounded so happy. Don’t flatter yourself, Addison.

“No, Nathan, it’s Sarah,”

“Oh, hello. Is something wrong?” He asked, and I could hear the worry in his voice. My insides melted a little knowing he somewhat cares for me.

“Why would you assume that something’s wrong?” She smirked.

“I don’t know…” Nathan mumbled.

“So I called you because I wanted to ask you what you think of Addison,” she said slowly and all I wanted to do was take my phone away from her rather than stand next to her helplessly. What’s done is done…if I take my phone away from her now, he’d definitely think something is up, even though it’s not my damn idea to ring him.

“Yeah…?” I could tell he was nervous and I was slowly dying of embarrassment.

“Well, what do you think of her?” Sarah pressed and I heard him sigh.

“Is it that obvious? I know where this is going,” he stated and my eyes widened for a second. Sarah glanced at me with the cheekiest smile on her face.

“Yeah, it kinda is. It’s okay, I approve of you two together,” Sarah’s smile grew and the other end of the line was silent for a few moments.

“Really? Uh, cool…yeah, that’s great. The lads approve of Addi as well. I guess it’s just up to me, huh?” Nathan stuttered a bit and I thought it was cute.

“Mhhm. Don’t wait too long though, or she’ll just add you to her list of “guys she can never be with because they’ve friendzoned her.” Sarah said as if she were quoting me and I gasped softly at her.

“Oh, what? That’s such a sad list…” he trailed off with a chuckle and I nodded at what he said. It is quite a sad list, but it's true.

“Yup, so be the first to actually ask her out! You’re special, Nathan. She likes you, too. She’s never been in a relationship, and personally I hope that you’re not only her first but also her last,” Sarah grinned and I looked at her in awe as she winked at me. Sarah’s the best.

“I’ll be nothing but the best,” Nathan said as a matter-of-factly and I broke out into a grin.

“Uh, Addi’s coming, so I’d better go, Nathan,” Sarah came up with a terrible excuse but Nathan bought it. They said their goodbyes and I was handed back my phone.

“Unbelievable,” I said, looking at her in awe and she shrugged.

“I told you he likes you,” she teased. “And, you’re welcome.”

“Thanks, I guess.” I chuckled.

It sucks, because now I have to act like I’m not expecting that Nathan’s going to ask me out.
