Chapter 19
Addison’s POV
“Nathan is such a gentleman, and that’s what’s so refreshing…”
“Yeah, we were out and about in London and I saw like, three paps following us…Nathan just said I’d be fine and told me to keep walking…it’s terrifying to me…”
“We were still trying to figure it out, and that’s why we didn’t tell our fans sooner…”
“Jesus, Nathan this, Nathan that. Shut up, Ms. Grande,” I muttered. I swear, this past month and a half since they admitted they’re relationship, “Nariana” has been everywhere. It’s been torturing to hear all those wonderful things about Nathan. I learned that The Wanted had come back home for a week week, and Ariana followed to promote her album. I must say her album is really good. I rolled my eyes at myself...I should be hating on this girl, but that would be terrible and shameful. In fact, I should just be happy for Nath.
“Yes, Ms. Reyes?” My history teacher suddenly said and the whole class turned to me.
“Uhm, sorry?” I asked.
“You rolled your eyes; was it something I said?” Mr. Baker asked condescendingly.
“Oh, no, I just thought of something…. That I would not like to share with the class, thanks,” I added and smirked, making some of my classmate snicker and he just chuckled and continued on. Mr. Baker was pretty chill, and we all knew that he’d ask you to share with the class if you had whispered something and whatnot like a stereotypical teacher. So I went right ahead and told him that I didn’t want to share my thoughts with the class.
“Ads, I know you’re hurting…it’d be good for you to talk about it, babe,” Sarah told me once we got home. I was about to go straight to my room to do my course work but she literally locked me out of my own room and dragged me into the living room. I had no choice.
“I don’t want to burden you with my silly problems,” my voice cracked and I shook my head. I really am a mess.
“Don’t make me slap you. We’ve been best friends for a long time, don’t you pull that crap on me. You know I’m here to listen. This is quite serious. As a woman, it’s okay to be sad and angry at a prick you thought truly liked you. Or even loved you,” she said and my head snapped up at the word “love.”
“I saw it in his eyes, Ads. Nathan was falling for you. I don’t know what happened, but all of this doesn’t seem natural…” she trailed off. “I honestly think that if they hadn’t gone to the US so soon, he would’ve told the fans about you. You should show him what he’s missing,” her eyes perked up suddenly and I raised an eyebrow at her.
“Who am I, Kate Middleton? ‘Show him what he’s missing,’” I scoffed and Sarah laughed. I glared at her and she immediately stopped.
“I think I’ll just let it go. If I tamper with someone like Nathan, I could cause a number of problems. I’d rather let him be….” I said truthfully and Sarah looked at me sympathetically.
“Why must you be so selfless? There should be more people like you…” Sarah said softly and she gave me a hug. We did our homework on the rug that night.
Come October and I was doing small gigs in small cafes around London. It was good for both Sarah and me as we now had extra cash. She's kind of become my stage mother, if you could put it that way, and that made me laugh. Since the break up, I haven’t been keeping tabs on any of the boys for what seemed like forever, but I knew Sarah was talking to Jay in secret. It’s not really a secret because I know. I know his laugh from anywhere and, usually on Friday nights, I’d here it from behind her closed bedroom door. Sarah should’ve known using headphones might have kept her secret Skype calls with Jay an actual secret.
“Hey, ready to go?” Sarah came through my room and leaned against the doorframe.
“How’s Jay?” I asked out of the blue and I watched Sarah’s reaction—it was priceless. I started laughing.
“That’s not funny,” she smiled but decided to just come out with it, “and he’s good. They’re all good. Everyone’s buzzing about how the boys brought Ariana from backstage…she was Nath’s “Heart Vacancy” girl last night,” she gave a sorry smile and I just shrugged.
“How is Nathan though?” I pressed on.
“I’m not sure, actually. It sounded like Jay was trying to cover something up when I asked about Nathan…. Whatever it is, I’m sure you don’t have to worry about it,” she grabbed my shoulders and shook me as if it would make the sadness crumble off of me. I sighed and got off my bed and we headed out to the Italian place, as they were hosting an open mic night. Going to that restaurant has kind of become our thing, and ever since Rachel and Yenni left about a month ago to go back to school, Sarah and I have found sentimental value in that restaurant.
Sarah and I ate as we watched other patrons entertain everyone else. Only five people have gone up, and I was just waiting for the right moment to get up there. I wasn’t getting paid for this—no one was; tonight is just going to be an enjoyably Friday night for my best friend and me.
“Oi, get on up there,” Sarah whispered in a creepy, English accent and I giggled. I looked around and it seemed like no one was sacrificing themselves so I got up from my seat and went onto the small platform. The middle-aged waitress Debra smiled at me. Sarah and I have gotten acquainted with Debra after coming here so many times in the past few months we’ve been in London. She’s a sweetheart.
“Hello…” I said timidly into the microphone. A few heads turned, though some continued eating or sipping on their beer and wine. “Everyone’s so good tonight, I’m not sure how to top things off here,” I laughed softly and my audience smiled. I thought for a second, and because I’m singing acapella, I decided on Lorde’s “Royals” to set a chill vibe in the room. I almost laughed at my word choice.
“Okay, I’ll be singing “Royals” for you lot,” I finally said and I got a few claps.
I went through the whole song; doing improves on some notes to kind of make the song my style and finished without my voice cracking. I thanked God for that. People smiled and cheered as I got off the stage and I thanked them, my face probably as red as a strawberry at this point. Just as Sarah was going to hug me, I felt someone tap my shoulder. Sarah’s eyebrows raised and I turned around only to see the one person I’ve been trying to forget: Nathan Sykes.
A/N: Well, isn't that an awkward situation? Hehe. Like I said, my lovely readers, I don't have anything against Nathan and Ariana...even though this is so delicious to write (taps fingertips together like a crazy cartoon villian)! Anyways...*cough*... I hope you all liked that chapter. Please comment and vote-- give me some in sight if you're all still enjoying this. A little off topic, but when I went to The Killers concert about a month ago, their drummer was the last to leave the stage. It was all so quiet because we were all watching him casually walk to the mic, and when he did, he spoke into it and said, "Tell your friends," then left the stage like a boss. Everyone started laughing and we were all just like, "Heck yes, we're gonna tell our friends about this amazing concert!"
So yep, wonderful readers, tell your friends about Viral ;) xx
Till next time :D
