Something wasn't right with Alyx, a month along into the pregnancy and her blood intake was high, along with her water intake. But she barely ate physical food. Her bump was the size of her bump when she was six months along with Ruben.

Everyone found out within the first few weeks when they came to pick Ruben up for training or schooling.

She couldn't stand up or get out of bed herself anymore, so I was constantly by her side watching as Ruben fought Mikey or Nick. She laid out on the lounge chair, the parasol over her as she sipped her drink.

We were nearing April, and neither of us had spoken about our plans for the wedding. She just occasionally fiddled with the ring around her finger. She closed her eyes putting the drink down on the table beside her as her actions became small.

"Alyx, are you okay?" I asked, and she gave a small nod.

"I'm just relaxing, I'm fine Cal." She gave a small smile as she coughed. Her hand pulled away and there was blood there. I hesitated. Should I ask her why she was so ill? I mean if it was that bad she'd tell us wouldn't she?

--

She was out shopping when it happened. I was with Ruben a few aisles over when she collapsed onto the floor, letting out a yell of pain. Her hands on her stomach. Sure, a few people gave us stares when we went over to help her, but that was beside the point. Someone was in labour, I think she never told us when she was due, and we gently lifted her to her feet. Her eyes were closed up in pain.

"Mum, are you okay?" Ruben asked, supporting her mostly whilst I called the boys. She nodded slightly and stood up a bit more, without his help. Her breathing was heavy and her eyes were drooped.

"I need to get somewhere where I can give birth, because I swear I will not have it in the middle of a shopping mall," Alyx hissed, sweat beading on her face.

"Hospital?" I asked and she nodded just as Ashton picked up his phone. "Ruben take her there, I'll collect the boys and we'll meet you there."

Alyx let out another pained cry as her legs gave way again.

Ruben

We slowed to a walk as we came to the hospital, and she fell to the floor, holding her bump.

"Ruben, go get someone to come out and get me," She whimpered, her breathing heavier so I jogged into the hospital and towards the front desk.

"Can I have some help, please? My mum is outside in the middle of a contraction," I asked urgently as panic laced my voice.

I was technically three, and I was already helping someone who was giving birth. I had such a messed up life. I followed the medics outside as they lifted her gently onto a bed and wheeled her inside.

--

It hurt seeing my mum in this much pain. Something wasn't right though, the nurses, midwives and doctors were giving each other off looks.

Dad burst through the door and looked between me and Alyx. He ran to her side as quick as he could without being revealed, just to be tapped on the shoulder by one of the doctors and taken out of the room. A few minutes Dad returned with his eyes glossed over and that joyful look on his face was wiped off.

"Ruben, we're going to have to ask you to wait outside," One of the doctors lead me out, little did I know that would be the last time I would see mum properly again.
