Chapter Nineteen

Alyx

I shot up panting from my nightmare. The room dark and lightening crack outside. Had I snapped out of one nightmare and into another?

I panicked and ran my hands around me, looking for Calum. He wasn't there.

"I'm going to be in my nightmare for what feels like forever, and I'm not going to sleep and I'll keep Calum awake." I panicked and shook my head furiously. Tears running down my cheeks. The door opened and I pulled the blankets up as if that would protect me.

"Alyx?" Calum whispered. I saw his outline and he walked towards me, hugging me tightly. I hugged back and he climbed into the bed.

"Why is it so dark?" I croaked.

"Because your blind silly," He shook his head laying down and the lightning flashed in the window. I shook my head and faced him.

"If I was blind I wouldn't have just seen the lightning!" I whispered and he sat up abruptly. His eyes widened and I laughed hugging him tightly.

"Can you walk?" He asked. I reached down to touch my legs, no sense in them. I shook my head.

"I can't feel my legs." He nodded smiling.

The next few weeks we planned out our wedding. Then it came to the end of May, I had been losing enough weight for it to be healthy because sitting around in a wheelchair doesn't burn enough calories.

I pulled myself from the lift on the stairs into my wheelchair. I then pushed myself outside and to the van where Mercy, Jayden, and Calum's sister were waiting. I never met her before, not until today. So I was rather nervous. I got to the back of the van and the doors opened, I lifted myself out of the chair and onto the back of the van. I grabbed my wheelchair and lifted it up into the van.

"So what dress are you looking for?" The woman looked towards the walking girls.

"Oh, we aren't getting the dress," Jayden laughed. "This is your customer, Alex."

The woman glared at me.

"Why are you coming to a really expensive place when you can't walk?" She rolled her eyes. I pushed myself out the wheelchair, balancing on what used to be walking legs and growled warningly at her.

"Maybe because my boyfriend and I are soon to be married and because even though my legs don't function like yours, although most of the time your legs are open, I still want to look pretty enough for him." Suddenly I was up in her face. Her eyes widened until I swayed slightly and Jayden caught me.

I was carried to the chair and the woman nodded.

"I'm sorry." She muttered and looked down at her papers.

"I see why my brother likes you," Mali smiled and pushed me through to the back of the shop where the woman took your measurements.

I had an assistant helping me dress into the first dress, she left me to lean against the wall slightly and look at it. I sighed. I wouldn't be able to walk down the aisle to see him. That was the only upsetting part about this whole thing.

"Alyx, come out, we want to see you in it!" Mercy yelled, I opened the curtain and stood in the little opening. I couldn't exactly walk.

The assistant walked over and helped me walk a few steps. She turned me around slowly and we started walking back to the changing rooms.

"Next one?" Mali called out, I nodded and the assistant helped me change again. I stood for a few seconds looking at my reflection before crumpling to the floor. I groaned as my back hit the wall.

"Alyx?" Jayden called as her footsteps neared. My hips ached.

"No, don't come in." I whispered feeling tears sting my eyes. "I'm fine." I pulled myself up and broke down sobbing silently.

"You're in pain Alyx, we can't continue shopping today," Mali whispered as I fell even with the help of the assistant. I shook my head.

"No. I can do this, I can't have my legs stopping me from doing everything." I whispered hiding the few tears rolling down my face. I stood up slowly and shakily as she and the assistant helped me to the changing rooms. "I'll change myself, thank you." I smiled and they walked off.

I looked at myself in the dress and I smiled. I liked this one. I turned slowly leaning on the walls for support. I took a deep breath and pulled open the curtains. I took a few shakey steps forwards before Nick caught me.

"When did you get here?" I asked, he chuckled.

"Calum was worried because none of you answered your phones the past hour, he made me come and check on you all," He smiled and helped me stand up. I smiled weakly as the assistant helped me change out of the dress. I was sat into my wheelchair and pushed towards the girls.

"What one was your favorite?" Mercy asked, I thought for a minute or two before deciding on the last one.

"The last one, the one I've just tried." I smiled. "What about you guys?"

"I liked the third one and the last one," Mercy smiled and they all mumbled some form of agreement, so I pushed myself over to the assistant and the woman who glared at me earlier. I pulled out my debit card and told them which dress.
