Chapter Six.
Hurting.
Joe's POV.
It's the last football game of the season. We're undefeated so far, no fumbles, no flags, nothing. Gabi hasn't missed a single game. Always cheering me on every week. She's been my biggest supporter through the whole season. I pulled up at her house like I always do, picking her up before I headed to the game. I hopped out of the truck, so I can help her up. She ran out the door and jogged to me, jumping on me and wrapping her legs around my waist. I wrapped her up tight in my arms.
"Somebody missed me." I chuckled.
"Just a tad. I know it's only been three hours, but I'm excited to see you play your last game of the season." She tightened her hold around me.
"I missed you too, baby. I'm nervous though." I muttered.
"Why in the hell are you nervous?" She leaned back, looking at me.
"I don't know. I know I shouldn't be, I've got the best cheerleader on my side." I sat her down and pressed a hard kiss to her lips. She pulled away and smiled. I leaned in again and she turned her head.
"Nope. No more kisses til you kick ass. Now if that ain't a reason to win, I'm not sure what is." She smirked.
"Oh, I'm really gonna whoop ass now." I boosted her in the truck and we were on our way.
----------
Gabi's POV.
When we got to the field, Joe had to go practice, so I helped Mrs. Briggs get everything ready in the concession stand.
"Anything else, Mrs. Briggs?" I asked, wiping my hands off.
"No, sweetie. We should be good now! Thank you for the help."
"I guess I better get out there. See ya!" I went to walk out when she grabbed my arm.
"I just want to tell you I'm sorry about what Beth did to you. I'm really glad Joe left her and found a good girl like you. Thank you." She said, smiling at me.
"Anytime, Mrs. Briggs. I love that boy to death." I gave her a hug and headed to the stands. I heard someone yell my name. I turned around to see Joe leaning against the fence, motioning at me. He was already dressed and looked amazing. I walked over to him.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Not even a good luck kiss?" He pouted.
I rolled my eyes and pressed my lips against his, hard. I pulled back and smiled at him.
"Now go kick some ass, boy. I love you."
"Always. Love you too, babe!"
He ran off to his team. I went up and sat beside Travis to watch the game.
----------
The game was going great. Our team was winning 54-0. It was the last 30 seconds of the game. We went for the last play. Joe went to block but the guy used fowl play and kicked Joe near the groin. He collapsed on the ground. The referee saw it and stopped the game.
"JOE!!" I screamed.
Medics ran to him, lifting him up. I ran to where the trainers room was so I could go in, trying to silence my tears. They walked up with Joe.
"Ma'am, you can't be in here." One of the medics said. Before I could say anything, Coach Briggs walked up and put his arm around my shoulders.
"Yes she can. Come on, sweetie."
We walked in and they sat Joe down. I stood behind him and cradled his head with my eyes closed so they could work on him. I heard everyone walk out but didn't open my eyes yet.
"Baby, you open your eyes now. I'm covered." Joe whispered.
I opened my eyes up and looked down. I could tell his leg was swollen and I could see black and purple skin peeking out from under the bandage.
"Baby.. I'm so sorry." I whispered, kissing his head.
"I'm alright. Please don't cry." He reached up and grabbed my hand.
"I didn't know if you were okay. I got scared."
"Don't be scared. I'm fine. I'm sorry you had to see that. When I get my hands on him I swear-" I cut him off.
"Travis is waiting for him in the parking lot."
"Dammit. I feel helpless. I bet you could whoop my ass right now if you wanted to." He groaned.
"Hush now. You're still the toughest guy I know." I walked around to where I could see his face.
"I love you. You know that?" He grabbed my waist and pulled me closer.
"I know. And I know I love you too. You want me to drive you home? I'll just drive your truck back to my house. Our parents are gone this weekend so I'll be coming over there anyways."
"Can you? How're you gonna get in though?" He asked.
"Travis is still here. He can help me then follow me home."
"Thank you, baby."
"Come on, champ. Lets get you home."
----------
I got Joe home safely. I helped him in his house, Travis helped him change clothes, and I tucked him in.
"Baby, is there anything you need before I go home? Do I need to stay?" I asked, sitting down on the bed beside him. I didn't want him to feel alone.
"Baby, go home. I'll be just fine. Come over as soon as you get everything done tomorrow."
"I will. I should be done around 10. I'll bring breakfast too. Is that gonna be okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah, baby, that'll be fine. Thank you, for everything."
I gave him a hug. "Anytime, baby. I'll call your parents on the way home."
"Thank you. I just want to sleep." He muttered. I could tell he was tired.
"Get some rest, baby. I'll be back in the morning. I love you."
"I love you too."
I gave him a soft kiss and headed out the door. I called his parents and told them everything. They wanted to come home but I told them I'd take care of him so they could enjoy their time. After much persuasion, they finally agreed. Once I got home, I called Joe and checked on him. He said he was fine. After that, I went straight to bed so I could get up earlier to get my stuff done earlier so I could head to Joe's house sooner.
