Father had called the guardian angel away for an important assignment.

'Dean will be fine, my son,' the angel was told.

The next few days were a nightmare in the making for the older Winchester. They had received a call from someone Dean and John had helped. It led to both brothers boarding a flight to exorcise a demon. When it was over, they discovered that their father was still active, giving out Dean's fairly new number to anyone who called him.

Sam was all the more adamant than ever that they had to find the man. The older hunter knew they would not find or hear from John Winchester unless the man wanted to be found or heard from.

The arguments continued, but Sam would back down for a while. Dean could be just as stubborn as his brother, and he kept pulling seniority as the older brother. The taller man would get really pissed, and it would start all over again.

The two drove for twenty hours straight, and Dean kept quiet again. The terrors of the flight and strange exorcism Sam performed had rattled him more than he wanted to say.

They pulled into a town, and the younger Winchester looked at his brother when they pulled to a stop under a stop light. Concern crossed his features.

"Hey, Dean, there's a Denny's up ahead. Let's get a regular hot meal. It's been a while since we just sat down and had supper together."

His brother stared at him, a question in his eyes. "Okay."

They pulled into the parking lot, and Dean parked the Impala. The two men entered the restaurant and found a booth. The younger brother ordered a Chef's salad, while Dean had a steak with a baked potato and soup instead of the side salad.

During the meal, Sam kept the conversation steered away from John and hunting, noticing that his big brother was finally starting to relax. He smiled softly and watched the green eyes check out the room every few minutes, always vigilant.

After the meal, they found a motel and got a room. There was no beer that night to the relief of the younger man. They took turns with the bathroom, and Sam found his brother sleeping with the television on. He turned off the t.v. and moved his brother into a more comfortable position.

Dean's nightmare woke his brother. Sam could hear him crying out about falling. He climbed into his brother's bed and pulled him into his arms.

"It's okay, Dean, we're not on an airplane. Nothing is going to crash; we're on solid ground. I promise you."

"Sammy?"

"Yeah, it's okay," the young man answered as his brother fell asleep in his arms. He had no idea that his unflappable brother had deep enough fears to cause nightmares. Arranging the two of them, Sam held his brother close and they both went to sleep in the older man's bed.

As he dozed off, Sam grinned, thinking Dean would freak and probably try to kick his ass in the morning when he woke up and found himself in his brother's arms in the same bed.
