Dean had gone back to the car and waited for his brother to finish talking to Matt Pike. His brother's attitude about family had irked him. Nothing seemed to have changed.

He thought back over their childhood. He remembered the times John had left them as well as the times he bore the brunt of their father's temper when Sam did or said something stupid. He winced when he thought about the time Sam ran away. He knew he shouldn't defend the man, but he saw what John was going through. He understood it partly.

John had wanted him to be a good soldier, and he failed so many times by protecting Sam from their father's anger. When he failed, he was punished. It was to be expected. Sam seldom if ever saw it. Once or twice he wasn't sure if his brother knew. He didn't have the cajones to ask Bobby.

Sighing, he waited for his brother and pushed away the panic that he might have to be alone again.
