-Tyde's POV-
I parked the car and Scarlett and I both got out. She followed behind me as we walked into the house. "Tyde, is that you?" A familiar voice called.
"Mum?!" I called. My mother soon ran over to me and held me in her arms.
"Oh my boy, it's so good to see you!" She smiled then kissed my cheek.
I laughed then looked over at Scarlett who was standing in the corner awkwardly. "Mum, this is my friend, Scarlett Jacobs."
Scarlett's eyes widened and she crooked a half smile, "Nice to meet you Mrs. Mellet." She shook hands with my mum.
"Nice to meet you too dear, and please call me Laurelle."
"Mum, we're going to be upstairs watching a movie if you need anything."
She gave me a nod of approval and Scarlett and I went up to my room.-Scarlett's POV-
I sat down on Tyde's bed while he began to type on his laptop. I was still a little shaken up by the run in with the police, but I'll calm down soon.
"Okay, the movie is starting. You can go ahead and take your shoes off."
"Um, okay." At first I was confused but then I realized that we'd be cross legged on a bed. "What movie are we watching exactly?"
"Peter Pan, it's my favourite." Tyde announced with a smile.
"Same here, I was in love with this movie as a kid." I mumbled.
As a kid, it was my favorite movie. I used to watch it with my parents all the time. We would cuddle up on the couch together and cover ourselves with a blanket. Dad and I would always rein act the scene where Peter was sword fighting with Captain Hook. I was Peter, he was Hook. Mum and I would also make homemade fairy dust to help us fly away from reality and into our imagination. Now that I'm older I realized that the fairy dust wasn't for me. It was for her, she's the one that wanted to escape the main land and go to Neverland. In a way I guess heaven is like Neverland. That is, if she went to heaven or if heaven even exists.
"As a kid? Aren't you still a kid though? I mean, we never truly grow up."
"Well some don't, I had to grow up pretty quick. You know, stand my ground and fight for myself."
"Weren't you parents supposed to help you with that?"
"I mean I guess. If they were, they didn't do a pretty good job doing it." Which was true. They were always fighting. When I would come into the room they'd stay quiet and act like they loved eachother. I pretended that I didn't know what was happening, for their benefit. It just seemed easier.
"You seem pretty mad at them."
"In a way I am, but what's there to do?"
After I said that he dropped the conversation and the movie began to play. I realized what time it was and told him I had to get home.
"The film just started." He whined.
"I know, I'm sorry but I promised to not be home late."
"Would you like me to drive you?"
I shook my head, "Its only a few streets down. I'll be fine."
I grabbed my shoes and went downstairs. "Leaving so soon?" Laurelle asked when she saw me.
"Its getting late, thank you for letting me stay."
"You're always welcome here. Just know that."
I put on my sneakers and nodded, then made my way outside.
The air was pretty cold for summer in Australia. I was glad I had a jacket to keep me from freezing. I began to walk down the street and just collected my thoughts. Everything was going well so far. Then again, it's only been three days.
The thought made me a little surprised. How so much could happen in so little time. Cars passed by me creating a colder wind, so I held onto my jacket
tighter.
I began to think about what I told Tyde earlier. About my parents not doing a great job at raising me. At times it was true. Like a couple of months before the incident happened.Flashback
I proudly walked over the kitchen with flyer in my hand. Before I entered I heard shushing, "Jade's here." My father whispered.
I stepped inside and smiled at them, "Hello Mum, Hi Daddy." I gave them each a kiss on the cheek.
"Hello dear." My mum said.
"I have to make an announcement!" I mentioned as I stood on top of a dining room chair. I held out my flyer, "I am going to be the lead in the school play."
My parents both smiled as they reached for the paper, "Jade that's amazing." My dad smiled as he picked me up from the chair.
"When is it?" Mum asked.
"Next Friday at 5pm, will you be there?" My ten year old self asked.
They both glanced at eachother, "Wouldn't miss it for the world." Father kissed my cheek and set me down. "Now go do some homework. Dinner will be ready soon."
I nodded. I knew there wasn't going to be dinner but I left anyway. I didn't want to hear them yelling.***
Opening night finally arrived. I was peeping through the curtains scanning the audience for my parents. "Jade, you're microphone!" Mrs. Simmons, the play director called.
I ran over to her and she hooked up my microphone. "Mrs. Simmons, when is show time?" I asked her.
She checked her watch, "Soon, why?"
"Just a wonder."
"Alright, everything is connected. How do you feel?"
I faked a smile, "Awesome."
She left and I was heading back to the curtains. Unfortunately someone was yelling out, "PLACES, PLACES, SHOWTIME!"
I ran behind the curtains and stood center stage with a smile on my face. The curtians soon opened and an applause rose from the crowd. I scanned it once more before I started my line. They still didn't show up.
When the show was over I asked my neighbor Lucy for a ride, she was a year older than me. "Yes of course, you did awesome by the way."
I smiled, "Thank you."
Mra. Simmons then walked over to me, "Amazing performance Jade. Parents must be proud."
The smile on my face faded and I nodded, "Yup so proud."Flashback over
I still remember how angry I was when I got home that night. They told me a family emergency happened but I knew they were fighting. I could tell by the red mark on my mother's cheek something had happened. "We'll make it up to you." I remember my father saying.
The school play wasn't the first time, once they left me with my grandparents for a week without explanation. They never came to my school from meetings or asked how my grades were. All of my classmates parents were involved in their lives. Mine weren't even close.
I didn't even talk about them because I was too embarrassed. Embarrassed to tell people that my parents argued every night and never got involved. As I got older I began to careless. I would constantly ask, "If they don't care, why should I?"
My walk home soon ended and I was at the front door. I knocked and Mason opened it. "There you are." He said.
I stepped inside, "Are your parents asleep?"
He nodded, "They just went into their room. What took you so long?"
"I walked here."
"Why?"
"I needed time to myself. It's been a long night, I'll see you in the morning."
