Stephen's POV
I held her hand the entire ride to the hospital. My mind was going a mile a minute, I was afraid. I didn't want to lose our babies, but I didn't want to lose her either. She was screaming in pain every so often and the paramedic was monitoring the babies and administering whatever medicine he could.
He asked a few questions and I did my best to answer them, but all I could think about was not losing her.
We arrived at the hospital and I hopped out the back of the rig, the paramedics rushed her into the Emergency Room and I followed them, soon Italia was at my side with Drew, her phone was in her hand, I imagined trying to get a hold of Robbie.
I wasn't allowed to go back while they worked on her, so I paced up and down the ER. Italia busy on her phone and Drew watching my every move.
"Stephen! What happened?" My head shot up in the direction of the sliding doors, to see Emily's mom, Diane, Fanta, and Colton.
I walked over to her calmly and she put her hands in mine. "I don't know, I went to check on her before we went to set and I found her on the ground, it's the babies. They won't let me go back."
She nodded and didn't speak another word as she joined Italia and Drew.
I walked up to the nurse, but before I could even say anything she spoke. "Mr. Amell, they are working on her, I can assure you that I will let you know as soon as you can see her."
I nodded and walked away.
I made my way outside and fell to the ground, the tears beginning to fall, what would I do if I lost her?"
I felt someone sit down next to me and I looked over to see Andrea.
"What the hell are you doing here?!" I spat.
She tried to grab my hand. "Mom called. I wanted to make sure you were okay." She spoke softly, but I moved away from her.
"This is all of your fault! Emily wouldn't be here if it wasn't for what you did today! Leave!" I shouted and not even a second later Italia was outside, pushing Andrea away.
"You need to go. Don't make this worse." She told her.
I was sitting outside for over an hour now, losing my mind because I didn't know what was happening to 3 of the most important people in my life.
My phone began to ring and I looked down to see it was Cassandra. I answered quickly, in case anything was wrong with Mav.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
"Yes. I was just wondering what was the latest I could keep Maverick?" She questioned.
I sighed. "If you don't mind, can you keep her over night?"
"Yeah. That's fine." She sounded surprised. "Is everything okay? You sound like you've been crying."
I took a breath. "I'm at the hospital with Emily. I don't know what's going on yet. Just please take care of Mav and I'll call you when I know more."
"Yeah. No problem. I'm sure everything will be okay, Steve, she's strong." She spoke sincerely.
"Thanks Cass." I hung up and made my way back inside.
The nurse at the front desk called me over.
"You can head back now. Room 5." She handed me a visitors pass and buzzed me in through the double doors.
I walked into her room. She was lying on her side and there were a lot of monitors connected to her.
I pulled up a chair and sat next to her, taking her hand.
She smiled softly. "Hey."
"Hi. Are you okay?" I asked.
Before she could answer the doctor walked in.
"Ms. Rickards?" Her head turned in his direction and he walked over to the edge of the bed.
"How are the babies?" She immediately asked.
His face didn't change, he simply looked at the monitors and read over a bit of her chart.
"We have some things to discuss first and then I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have." He replied and we waited for him to continue.
"You have what is called Preeclampsia. It's usually not diagnosed until about 20 weeks, but in some cases it can be caught early and I am glad that it was."
"What does this mean for her and the babies? Why does she have it?" I asked, worriedly.
Emily's POV
"Well, it is usually found in first time pregnancies and when a woman is carrying more than one child, which is both in Emily's case. Preeclampsia can lead to Eclampsia, but we are going to do our best to avoid that. What is going on now with you, Emily, is that you have high blood pressure caused by the pregnancy, you didn't have this before, also I'm sure you've noticed some swelling in your hands and face, which is typically normal in a pregnancy, just not this early and rapid weight gain is another symptom—what we want to do here...."
The doctor's words began to fade into the background as I thought about the danger I was putting on my children with this work schedule, dealing with Stephen's family and Cassandra. I needed to put myself and my babies first and that is what I was determined to do.
"Have you been having severe headaches over the past few days?" He asked and I nodded.
"Okay. Well, your regular OB will be in shortly and I will go over things with her and we'll go from there, for now just get some rest. I will leave this information packet with you so that you can read over the symptoms and if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask."
"Are my babies okay?" I asked.
He nodded. "For now everything is stable, we're going to run a few more tests and we'll know more. For now it's best to stay calm."
He walked out and Stephen took the pamphlet and began reading out loud.
I pushed it out of his hands and he sighed. "I know you don't want to hear any of this, but we need to be prepared."
I shook my head.
"No?" He questioned. "No, what?"
"We don't have to be prepared. I do. These are my babies and I will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, we are in this predicament because of your sister and I know that you know that. I don't want any more problems, so you can go. You're off the hook."
I didn't let my voice tremble, or show any kind of weakness, I had to be strong, it was all that I had left.
"Emily, don't do this. You know that I love you and I am here because I want to be." He pleaded.
I turned away from him. "Well I don't want you here."
"Em—" He tried to take my hand again.
I pushed his him away. "No. You need to go. These are my kids. My responsibility. We're not married and there's no proof that they are even yours, so just go."
He stood up and walked out the door, I kept my head turned away from him because I knew if I looked into his eyes I wouldn't be able to let him go.
Stephen's POV
I stood in the doorway and took one last look at her. She wouldn't turn my way and I knew this was the end for her, but it wouldn't be for me. I wouldn't let it be.
Once I was back in the waiting room, everyone jumped up and started asking every question they could think of. I ignored them all and walked outside. I punched the wall and soon my hand was bleeding and I couldn't control the tears.
I tried to fall to the ground, but someone caught me.
"Hey. Hey. Stephen. It's going to be okay, brother." I cried, more than I ever had in my life and he took it all in for me.
"I don't know what to do, Rob."
"We'll figure this out. I got you."
