Alex’s POV
I watched Ivy carefully in the rearview mirror. She was still pretty shaken up. She was trying to make everything seem okay, I was familiar with this, because I do it all the time. I reached my left arm behind my seat and rubbed her knee affectionately.
“You alright, Little Lamb?” I asked. She pulled out a headphone.
“What?” She asked.
“Are you okay?” I repeated. She nodded and put her headphone back. I let her be and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it and rolling the window down. I closed my eyes, and hummed along with the radio. Gage was worried, I could feel his glances. I sleepily opened one eye and raised an eyebrow at him. “What’s up?” I asked him, taking another drag.
“You worry me, Little Lion.” I shook my head.
“I don’t know why.” I answered glancing over my shoulder to make sure we weren’t being listened in on. Luke had conned Jesse into a playful game of rock paper scissors, and by the look on his face, he was losing.
I sighed. “I just hope we’re half as good as I’d like to think we are.” I stated, taking another drag.
“It’s more than that, Alex.” He shook his head lightly. “You smoke too much, you drink too much… What’s going to happen when you come off that high again?” He was referring to when Jake left me.
He and I had been together for three years, but we had been unofficial for two years prior to that. Jake and I were practically inseparable. We did everything together. He taught me everything I know. One day, he decided that I wasn’t good enough for him, and he left. He moved away, and I hadn’t heard from him since. I was glad for that. No one would ever know how much he had really torn me up. How much mental and physical abuse he had put me through. He was the sole reason for my addictions. I closed my eyes, trying to block out that painful memory.
“Alex, I’m not stupid, and I know he still gets to you.” I glared at him, and you could feel the temperature of the van drop.
“Gage, I know what I’m up against better than anyone.” I spat. “He doesn’t bother me anymore.”
“If that’s what you want to believe, you go right ahead, Little Lion. I’m just worried about my best friend, is all.” We pulled into the McDonald’s parking lot, and I got out and slammed the door behind me.
“What got into her?” I could hear Luke asking Gage. He just shook his head. “Let’s get some chow, I’m starving.”
“That’s nothing new.” I heard Ivy mutter as she caught up. “What’s up? She asked, concerned. I shook my head angrily. “Gage is right, as usual. It pisses me off.” I said angrily.
“You know, he really does care about you.” She said quietly. I nodded. “A lot. We all do. Even Luke. EVEN IF HE IS A JACKASS!” She yelled over her shoulder.
“What’d I do now?” Jesse whined.
