Chapter 1

"I don't understand!" I shouted at him, watching him pack my things in a hurry.

My uncle waved me off," Not here, Annabeth. It's too dangerous."

"What's too dangerous?" I demanded. He continued to ignore my questions. I crossed my arms.

"I'm not going anywhere with you until you tell me what's going on." I retaliated.

"Annabeth Melanie Grey," Uncle Dean spat, looking at me with furious eyes," help me pack your things. I'll explain everything on the way. Do as I say. Hurry!"

I reluctantly threw everything I owned into suitcases. My uncle seemed sincere, I knew I had to follow his orders. All he had ever done his whole life was protect me, and, in my heart, I knew that was exactly what he was trying to do.

"Where's uncle Sam?" I asked.

"In the car." Dean replied. "Here, grab these two."

He handed me a suitcase and my backpack while he grabbed my other suitcase. We rushed out of the house and into the dark summer night. We were greeted by a running black 1967 Chevy Impala, the driver was none other than my other uncle Sam Winchester. He quickly hopped out of the car to help us with my belongings. The two brothers shoved what they could into the trunk and then put the rest in the backseat.

Dean rushed over to the driver’s side and Sam made sure I was safely in the backseat before he entered the passenger side.

"Get down as far as you can." Dean ordered urgently.

"You said you would tell me what's going on, now tell me!" I pried.

"Annabeth, just get down, okay?" Sam said comfortingly. "We'll explain everything when we're safe."

"We'll never be safe." Dean muttered under his breath.

"Safe from what?" I asked. They were freaking me out more and more by the second.

"Just stay down." Dean said.

I couldn't help but start to silently cry. Where were they taking me? Where were my parents? I wasn't being given any answers. I just came home from school to an empty house, like I always do, and then all of the sudden Dean shows up and tells me that my parents are missing and that we need to leave as soon as possible. Sam and Dean are my mother's brothers, her maiden name was Winchester. I am very close to the both of them, making it even harder to believe that they won't tell me what is happening.

My cries must have been heard, because Dean's hard expression softened somewhat.

"It's going to be okay." Dean assured me. "You'll know everything soon."

I took a deep breath to steady myself and nodded. I had to calm down. Whatever this was, whatever happened, it was big, and I needed to be prepared for the worst.

"Are they dead?" I asked in a voice barely audible.

Sam and Dean gave each other a long look before answering.

"We don't know."

I closed my eyes. At least there was still a chance that my parents were alive. Wouldn't I feel it if they were really gone? Wasn't there something somewhere that said you would know when your loved ones were truly gone?

I stayed cowered down low for what seemed like hours. Every muscle in my body ached, I longed to stretch out and relieve my pain. Sleep was my only relief. When I awoke, it was light outside and my limbs hurt more than ever.
