Before I knew it, it was nighttime. We had just crossed over the Virginia state line when Dean yawned. I wasn't exactly sure how long we had been driving. Sam answered my question.
"Dude, you've been driving for almost 24 hours. Let me take over." He offered.
Dean shook his head," No way, man. This is my baby we're talking about."
Sam rolled his eyes," It's not like I've never driven before."
"See," Dean pointed a finger at Sam," that kind of attitude is exactly why I won't let you drive."
Sam scoffed," What attitude?"
"You act like this is just another car."
"It IS just another car. It's a hunk of metal!" Sam retaliated.
"I swear to God. If we weren't on the road, I'd beat the shit out of you." Dean mumbled, shaking his head.
"Try it." Sam challenged.
"If you're through?" I cut in, resting my elbows on both seats in front of me. "I have to pee."
"You just peed two hours ago." Dean groaned.
"Exactly. TWO HOURS ago."
"There's probably a gas station up here somewhere. If not you'll just have to go in the woods." Dean chuckled.
I rolled my eyes," After all the talk of monsters, you guys would make me go into a dark and secluded forest by myself?"
"Yep." Dean teased. I looked at the eerie darkness of the hundreds of acres of land surrounding my scenery.
"The road is starting to get busier," Sam said," there must be a town up ahead. We can stop there and get some rest. I'm sure we're all pretty hungry too."
Dean grimaced," Did you really have to mention food?"
"No wonder why you're so cranky." Sam remarked. "You get cranky when you're hungry."
"No," I said," I think he's just cranky all the time."
"I'm not cranky!" Dean snapped.
"Whatever you say." Sam and I said in unison.
My stomach really did start to ache with the talk of food. It was definitely clear that I hadn't eaten in a whole day.
As I looked out into the darkness, I was glad that my two uncles were there to protect me from whoever we were running from. Even if they were crazy, even if they really did believe there were monsters out there, they were still my uncles, and I loved and trusted them with all of my heart. But it also made me think of my parents. Wherever they were, were they out in the dark? Were they alone and scared? Were they separated? Did they know I was okay? I prayed to God that they were safe.
We drove for another 20 minutes before we saw little stores and houses that belonged to a small town. My bladder was relieved when we quickly stopped at the first gas station. It wasn't long before our hunger got the better of us, leading us to a small diner called Betty's Finest. Dean parked the impala in front of the window so he could keep an eye on it. We headed inside and a sweet, old woman led us to a booth next to the window. Luckily it was a 24 hour diner, seeing as it was 11:30 at night and only one other person was eating this late besides us. A man with a shady ball cap was eating what seemed like a hamburger on rye bread. Maybe he wasn't shady, maybe he was just lonely.
Dean ordered his typical bacon cheeseburger with extra bacon and extra fries and a coke, Sam ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with fries and a water, and I ordered a chicken pot pie with a side of veggies and a raspberry iced tea.
