Max's POV:

I pace the Poseidon cabin impatiently. Outside, I can hear Percy and Annabeth talking seriously. I can hear them almost perfectly, like they're just two feet away. No pun intended.

After what seems like hours, Percy and Annabeth stop talking and walk into the cabin. I turn to face them, and they both have the faces of someone who finally figured out what to do with me.

Oh gods.

Wait, where did I get the 'gods' part from?

Screw it. I'm a demigod, I might as well curse like one.

"Max, we need to ask you a couple of questions. Do you know who your mom is?" Annabeth asks me. I shake my head no. My mom died during the Mogadorian invasion. I don't know anything about her.

Maybe someone will, though.

"Um, before you ask anymore questions, Percy, do you know any way I can, you know, talk to dad?" I ask Percy. Whoa, I'm already referring to him as 'dad'.

"There are two ways," Percy answers, nodding his head yes. Of course there are two ways. Two's my lucky number. The second way is most likely the easiest.

"One, you can talk to him with water, which is pretty easy. The second way is to go to Olympus and talk to him face-to-face, which is impossible now since Zeus is forbidding the gods with communicating with their children," Percy finishes. Really? I came to this camp at the worst time possible.

Just then Leo bursts through the doors like a madman, which he probably is. He's smiling widely, which he usually is, and calls out to Annabeth and Percy, "Guys, it's time to plan." Percy and Annabeth exchange nervous glances before heading towards the open door.

"Plan what?" I question curiously. What can I say, I'm curious.

"We're going on a quest to save the world, it's what we usually do," Percy answers nonchalantly. Huh. I think I just found another Garde.

Or not, either way, we have the same goal.

"Long story short, Mother Nature is trying to kill us, so avoid trees as much as you can," Annabeth adds in, before shutting the door closed behind her.

I will say it again, I came to this camp at the worst time possible.

'Avoid trees as much as you can'? That's the advice you're giving me right now? Have you not looked at what's right outside this camp? What's surrounding this camp?

I stare at the door for what seems like hours until I finally walk out of the Poseidon cabin, completely confused. The first person I see is Leo, so I walk over to him to get some answers. Maybe it's the crazy people who will actually help out the new girl. I get some looks from people around me as I'm walking to Leo, which I've grown used to.

When I approach Leo, he's sitting in the grass alone, fiddling with some wires. I stop next to him, casting a dark shadow over him. He looks up and smiles. Will you ever stop smiling like an idiot?

"Hey Maxy, what's up?" Leo asks, patting an empty patch of grass next to him. I sit down next to him, automatically feeling warmth spread through me when I get close to him. And it's not the type of warmth people feel when they like someone, it's actual warmth, like what the sun gives us, thank you very much Apollo.

"First of all, don't call me that. Second, I came here to get some answers. I figured it's the crazy people who might actually help out," I answer.

"Well, then you've come to the right person, cause I'm the craziest person you'll know," Leo replies.

"Hard to believe," I respond sarcastically. Leo chuckles, but I was serious.

"So what do you want to know?" Leo asks, which is a really easy question.

"What's up with this 'quest' everyone's talking about?" I ask.

Leo sighs, like it's tough to explain, his smile faded completely.

Goal accomplished.

Leo then starts to explain how seven demigods have to go on a dangerous quest to defeat Mother Nature, or Gaea. "Yeah, she's evil apparently. Even grass is dangerous to us demigods now. Anyways, the prophecy goes like this, 'Seven half-bloods shall answer the call, to storm or fire the world must fall, an oath to keep with a final breath, and foes bear arms to the doors of death'. Weird, right?" Leo finishes. I must look like I just figured out the world was ending tonight, cause Leo looks at me and laughs.

Stop. Smiling. Why do you keep smiling? Is that your hobby? Annoying people with your unbreakable smile?

I straighten my face to look normal, but I'm on the verge of breaking into laugher with him. I don't know why, but hearing him laugh makes me want to laugh with him.

That's it, if I start to develop feelings for this guy, I'll stab him myself.

When he's done laughing, he looks at me with a warm smile and asks, "Want to see something cool? Well, it's not exactly 'cool', it's actually 'warm'," I nod my head yes. If it gets my mind off the fact that I want to strangle myself, then sure, go ahead.

Leo holds out his palm, and a few seconds later, a small ball of flaming red fire bursts to life, dancing in Leo's hand wildly, like it's trying to imitate his personality. I stare at the fire in shock and surprise, then look up at Leo. He slightly smiles, and I see the red flames reflecting off his brown eyes.

Is it time to get that sword out? Nah.

Leo locks eyes with me, and it seems like we're stuck in that moment forever, just gazing into each other's eyes. I notice him slightly lean in closer.

Time to get that sword out.

"Is this what you usually do to the newbies?" I ask, breaking the silence, but we don't stop staring at each other.

"Depends," Leo answers.

"On what?"

"If they're worth it or not."

Let's get that sword out now.

Then someone's smacking the back of Leo's head. Again.

"Valdez, hit on my sister one more time and I'll drown you to death," Percy threatens. Leo and I jump up in surprise, the flames in Leo's hand dying. Percy is standing behind Leo, glaring at him with his arms folded.

"No, no no no no no, I wasn't hitting on your sister! I was, um, complimenting her?" Leo tries, and I look at him like he's an idiot. Well, he is, so....yeah.

I'm not good with this love stuff at all, so I need someone to describe to me what's going on right now.

Percy furrows his eyebrows in confusion, which is what I should be doing. Was Leo really hitting on me? If so, I'm definitely taking my sword out.

Percy sighs, then shakes his head in frustration. I feel you, big bro.

Big bro. Now that's happening.

This camp is ruining me.
