I've Been Waiting For You To Say This (Zayn)
“Promise me,” the voice on one end of the phone insisted earnestly, trying to convince the other, but all it received was silence.
“Tina, this cannot go on,” the voice continued almost as if it was used to repeating the same words again and again. “You have to tell him what’s bothering you. He isn’t the only one who has lost something here. Did you know that your mum called me today? She’s worried babe – we all are and at this rate -”
A sudden slam of a door was heard at the other end. “Is that Zayn?” The voice further asked but before it could say anything else the phone had been put down.
“Anyone there?”
Tina sighed ruefully and looked thoughtfully at her phone, trying to go over what her friend had just said. It was too bad she hadn’t been listening, but now that he was back, now she could remember. Her friend was right of course – she always was. ‘If only it were that easy,’ she thought to herself. She looked at her reflection in the mirror in front of her. Perfect on the outside. ‘Like a rose,’ her father would always say. But every rose had thorns, didn’t it? And her thorns? They were on the inside. And they were killing her, slowly but surely threatening to poison her happiness just like it had once already.
“Tina?” someone called again. She recognized the voice. Harry. Was it Harry’s turn already?
On Tuesday, Liam was with him after the press conference. Louis drove him home back on Wednesday. Thursday had called for her assistance. Niall carried him back home on Friday. And it was Saturday. Yeah, they were back to Harry.
She stood up from where she was sat, looked at her reflection once more and made her way out of the room. She walked across the long, empty hallway and saw just what she had expected and that was Harry supporting him. Zayn. He leaned further into Harry – he had to, he was so drunk.
His beautiful caramel eyes were now bloodshot and scary, his hair a messy disarray atop his head and his clothes tattered and torn. His stubble was prominent and dirty and he was struggling to stand upright. His entire appearance was generally askew and he reeked of liquor and unhappiness. He looked less like a millionaire pop star of a young, famous boy-band and more like a person who was missing something, had given up on everything and could do nothing - at least, that’s what the tabloids had been saying.
Wordlessly, Tina walked over to Harry and him, carried the 20 year old to his bed and laid him down.
“Thank you,” she murmured to Harry once Zayn was comfortable in his bed. She didn’t have the courage to look him in the eyes as she said this so her gaze remained fixed on Zayn and she concentrated on his breathing.
She saw Harry shift awkwardly on the side. “Anytime and take care of yourself,” he muttered and turned to leave but as he trudged away he threw an anxious glance at the couple over his shoulder. He wondered how much longer this would last. Tina had handled everything so far but Zayn was not showing any signs of progress. Surely she had a breaking point? She had already been through so much…He saw her sit by his bedside and stroke his hair gently, not a sign of lost hope in the eyes that still showed the utmost adoration. And then he walked away knowing that his friend was a lucky man. But if only he knew…
…
When Zayn woke up with a start the next morning there were a million things wrong. There was a dull pain in more than one part of his body and he had this feeling – this feeling that something was wrong. Before he could even think his hand flew to the right side of the bed. What he needed was there. He decided to ignore his throbbing head and parched throat because this was more vital. But no, it was empty. Just the pale blue sheets and a matching fluffed up pillow. His head turned left in a movement so sudden he felt a kink in his neck. As one hand flew to rub it he wondered why there was a dull thudding in his heart as well.
