Ian:
"Ian, Ian!" I slowly fluttered my eyes open to find us stopped in some sort of parking lot, and the clock in Anthony's car read 3:48 a.m.. I stretched out and looked around a little, blinking away the clouds of sleep blurring my vision. Anthony was shaking me awake, smiling a little. I'm not sure why he was smiling, considering we basically hated each other at the moment, but as I stared at his smiling face, it all came back to me. When we were just at the Grand Canyon, and he basically forced me to just totally ditch out plan to stay there for the night and go home, and pretty much dragged me to some secret location he wouldn't tell me. And for some reason, I trusted him.
I sat up and looked around. "Where the hell are - Oh my God," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt and turning around to face away from the gray building in front of us. I recognized this scene; the flashing lights and the roaring of expensive-sounding cars.
Anthony had taken us back to Vegas.
"Anthony..." I breathed, looking back at him. "Why... why did you... why are we..."
"Come on," he said, opening his door, "I already checked us in."
I sat for a second, trying to process exactly where I was and what was happening, then decided to just follow him inside.
I sleepily followed him, my bag slung over my shoulder, down the hallway and to our room. He walked in and smiled, but I wasn't smiling. Now I realized what he was doing.
The room only had one bed.
I sighed and set my bag on it, then looked over at Anthony when he sat right next to me. I sort of glared at him, pushing my bag behind him to show that the bed was mine. It was his turn for the floor.
His smile fell, and he looked down at his lap, where he twisted his fingers around and picked at the cuticle on his thumb, which he always did when he was nervous.
"Anthony," I started, and stopped when he looked back up at me with nervous, sad eyes that seemed to send a dagger right through my heart.
I swallowed hard and continued. "Why... why are we here?"
He looked back down and shrugged shyly. "I don't know. I... I didn't wanna go home, and... I just felt like the Grand Canyon wasn't really a great place for our last stop. And..."
He looked up and straight ahead towards the wall, and I realized that his eyes seemed wide-awake, despite driving for like, seven hours straight through the night, and I could tell he didn't have any caffeine.
"And... I don't know. I wanted to come back."
I nodded, shifting my eyes to the floor, where there was only about an inch of space between our feet. His Converse had seemed to just get dirtier and dirtier as the summer progressed, and by now, they were almost completely black.
"Look, Ian," he said, stratling me a little. "We need to talk. God, we really need to talk."
"I know," I accidentally whispered, watching as his right thumb picked away at his left.
"Here's not really... the place, though..." he trailed off, then looked to me.
I looked back and stared into his eyes, which seemed so big and gorgeous and perfect.
"I agree."
He stared deep at me for a second before looking back down to his hands and saying, "Do you wanna like, go somewhere?"
I raised my eyebrows a little. "Right now? What's gonna be open at 4 in the morning?"
"It's Vegas, dude," he deadpanned. "What won't be open?"
"True."
It was silent for a moment as we both stared at the floor, lost in our own thoughts that most likely mimicked the other's, then he cleared his throat.
"So, you wanna just like, walk somewhere?"
I shrugged. "Okay."
