Ian:
It was about two in the afternoon, and there we were, standing on the walkway over the Grand Canyon, staring across all the reddish-brown rocks and down to the never-ending drop under us. It was crazy to think about actually; there was just a thin sheet of glass in front of us, keeping us from falling to our deaths.
This was the last stop on our trip. Tomorrow, we would be on our way back home. Back to Sacramento. Back to normal.
It made me so sad. This was supposed to be the best summer of our lives, the one we would never forget when we were on our deathbeds. But it had turned into a disaster. At this point, I just wished it was over. Actutally, I wished it had never even happened.
I had no idea where we were right now, actually. We had barely spoken a word since last night. We just woke up this morning, got ready, drove two hours in complete silence except for the radio, and came straight here. And now here we were, standing on a little platform over the Grand Canyon that could break at any second and send us plummeting to our deaths, and we would die mad at each other.
And I really didn't care.
Really though, last night was the death of me. Literally. I wanted to die afterwards.
That wasn't just some "little fight." That was the mother of them all. By far the worst of them yet.
But I didn't care. I was pissed. I needed to get it out of my system. If he really didn't realize what a complete douche he was being by now, I had to tell him or he never would.
After he left to God knows where, I really didn't know what to do. I wanted to run after him and apologize and tell him it was okay, but I was too stubborn. As hard as it was, I had to show that I actually meant what I said. And to do that, I had to just let him go. I had to pretend that I didn't care that he was gone for three hours and I had no idea where he was when in reality I was more worried than I'd ever been in my life. I had to pretend that I wasn't extremely relieved and happy when he came into the dark hotel room where I was pretending to sleep at 1:30 in the morning. I had to pretend I didn't care that I was losing my best friend.
We had been standing there for ten minutes or so, but I really didn't know for sure because I kept zoning out. It just hurt so much. Staring at the desert-like rocks in front of us, it reminded me of a happier time. Back in The Black Hills at the beginning of the summer, when we were both happy and excited and couldn't wait for the rest of the summer. And now here we were at the very end of it all, compltetely and totally pissed at each other and just wanting to go home at this point.
God, I would give anything to be able to go back to that time. To change the whole summer. Because I made a promise, and when I make promises, I keep them. But not this one. Anthony wasn't having the best summer of his life. It was probably his worst. And it was all because of me.
I heard a heavy sigh escape from Anthony next to me, startling me out of my thoughts. I just kept my eyes forward, pretending to enjoy the view when I really just wanted to be alone so I could break down and cry.
"This is our last stop, isn't it?" Anthony asked, and I tried to hide the shock on my face. I was shocked that he actually talked to me. We were both so stubborn I thought that we would never speak again.
I nodded slowly, still not looking at him.
"Wow." He laughed a little. "This has gone by fast."
I just nodded again.
He sighed rather dramatically. "I know you're mad at me, but it's our last stop before going home. Do you really wanna spend our last stop not talking all day?"
I stared straight ahead, and even though I could feel his eyes on me I refused to look back.
I shrugged a little. "I guess not."
"Exactly. So can we just forget about this for now?"
I blinked. I couldn't just "forget about it." Yes, I wanted our last stop to be happy, but just "forgetting about it" was sort of impossible for me.
I didn't say anything.
He sighed again, and out of the corner of my eye I saw him take his arms off the railing and stand up straight.
"Would you be really upset if I changed your plans a little?"
I finally pulled my eyes from the view and looked over at him.
"What?"
"You heard me," he said, shrugging.
I shook my head a little. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Get in the car," he said. "And I'll show you."
