Ian:

I really wanted to tell Anthony what his drunken self had told me last night, but couldn't get myself to. I still hurt so bad.

And I meant that literally, because I actually hurt. Mentally and physically. The love of my life doesn't love me, so obviously I hurt mentally, and I also really hurt physically from fucking passing out on the bathroom floor. That tile is not a comfortable matress.

Anyway, our next stop was St. Louis, and definiely our longest drive yet. The only thing that I knew was here was the arch thing, so we decided to go there after checking into our hotel. First, we stopped to grab some Panda Express, then took it to eat by the arch.

Despite the giant mass of people, it was a really cool place. It was getting pretty late in the evening, and the sun was setting right in the middle of the giant white structure, creating one of the coolest effects I've ever seen.

We sat on this grassy hill in front of it, eating our dinner and watching the children play in front of us, smiling silently to ourselves.

After our food had turned into empty white boxes and the sun was down almost all the way, a lot of the people had disappeared and it was starting to get kinda cold.

I was just about to ask Anthony if he was ready to leave when he laid down on his back, staring up at the sky. I watched him for a moment and then decided to join him, laying down so we were side-by-side, staring up at the stars that seemed to multiply with every breath I took in.

We sat in silence for a moment, and then Anthony broke it when we could only faintly hear one other voice to the left, talking on a cell phone.

"Hey, Ian, can I ask you something?"

"Of course," I replied, turning my head a little to glance at him.

He sighed, then laughed a little. "What exactly happened last night?"

I bit my lip, closing my eyes for a brief moment. I didn't wanna answer this question. I didn't wanna think about what he told me.

"Well," I started, deciding that I would just avoid the conversation that took place in the hotel room, "we went to a bar, you got really drunk, we went back to the hotel, and you... passed out, like, as soon as we got there."

"You sure I didn't say or do anything weird?"

I clenched my hands into fists, which is what I always seemed to do when telling a lie. "No."

I felt him look over at me, and I turned my head so I could meet his eyes. Our faces were only inches apart, and I could feel his hot breath against my face, and I wanted to feel his lips against mine so badly, and then he looked back up at the sky.

"You know you're a terrible liar," he said, staring upwards. "What did I say?"

I sighed, knowing I couldn't avoid it. "Well," I said, rolling my head back over, "you tried to call your ex-girlfriend, but I took your phone so you wouldn't embarrass yourself, and then you said you missed her, and then..." I swallowed hard, my stomach in knots. "You said that for a while, you thought you... liked me, and that's why you kissed me, but... but you reailized that you didn't... you only missed her."

Both of us were silent for a moment, and only then did I notice that the voice on the phone had vanished, and then I watched as he stood up, brushing off his back.

He reached out his hand, and I stared at it for a second before hesitantly grabbing it and having him pull me to my feet. He began walking back towards the car, rather quickly, and I struggled to keep up.

He drove back to the hotel way over the speed limit, and we both sat silently. I wanted to ask why we left so urgently, why he didn't say anything after I told him what happened.

And when we got back to the hotel, all my questions were answered.

Because before I could even close the door to our room, he had me back against the wall, kissing me hungrily. And my eyes were wide open and I couldn't even process what was happening, but it was right. It was what I wanted.

And then, just as I started to kiss back, he migrated his lips downward, working his way down to my neck, then slowly unbuttoning my shirt and sloppily pressing his lips against my bare chest, and I smiled in pleasure because I knew what was happening, and it was what I had wanted to happen for so many years, and it was really about to happen. And even though I didn't know why it was happening, and it was so sudden, it was perfect. And it couldn't have felt more right.

The rest of events that took place that night were for us, and only us, to know.
