Bokuto felt like he'd spent all his life with Akaashi, so he didn't understand the words of the police officer when she said that he was missing.
He didn't understand what was going on when Akaashi's mom and dad came over to his house and started crying, talking about how they haven't seen him since last night, and that they didn't even find a note from him about leaving.
He didn't understand, and it was driving him crazy.
He tried calling, texting, going over to his house, the school, his teammates, but nothing, and Bokuto was terrified.
He felt a funny twinge in his heart. Not the nice feeling, no, this wasn't love, this was pain.
This was horrible, horrible pain.
And now, Bokuto was driving around, hoping, searching, praying, crying, and a complete mess as cars honked at him down the road.
This feeling. He felt it before.
There were times when Bokuto would go on vacation and feel like this, and he'd panic because Akaashi wasn't there. Akaashi would call it "annoying clinginess", but Bokuto called it "strange obsession".
This didn't feel right at all.
No, Bokuto needed to see his face, watch as he smiled and grinned and laughed and sighed, hear his voice as he spoke and yelled, he just needed to see Akaashi again.
He was ignoring the calls from the police officer. He was ignoring the calls from his mom, and Akaashi's mom, and everyone.
He ignored as the voicemails played over.
"Bokuto! Come home, it's too late, we're so sorry!"
"Bokuto, I'm so, so sorry. He's already gone, come back, they found his body."
He got the story from bits in pieces in his hearing. He got the story from "bullying" and "pressure" and "suicide" and "body found in the park"
But Bokuto kept driving on, down the road, tears streaming down his face until finally he stopped in a parking lot and sat and stared down at his phone, because Akaashi would never text him again at night, telling him that he needed to sleep to save energy for practice the next day, and Akaashi would never call him again to say that Bokuto left something at his house, and Akaashi would never set to him again, or smile and cheer when they won a game, and Akaashi would never give him the little or the big things anymore, because he was dead.
It took so long for Bokuto to let it sink in.
And when he did, it was very hard to stop the tears from falling.
