A day or two had passed after my first kiss with Daryl. My back had healed except for some sore spots, my ankle had almost healed completely, Carl had recently gotten back on his feet and Daryl was feeling a little better. We hadn't talked about our relationship status and we hadn't talked about our little make-out session, but I caught him staring at me every now and again. I'd smile and he'd smile, but he'd try his best to cover it up. I was with Daryl in his tent talking about Sophia when Andrea came in. She had a book in her hand, "Hey." she said to Daryl. She froze in her tracks once she saw me. Her left eye was a nasty yellow color and the area around her nose was blackishly purple. Andrea had been avoiding me since the fight. I heard Shane whistle outside and call out to someone, "Hey fruit man!" I stood up and looked at Daryl, "Ooh, someone has fruit. I'll be back. You want anything?" He reached out and took the book from Andrea, "Nope."
I walked out and looked around for the "fruit man". I debated on going back to the tent when I saw Glenn coming towards me with a basket of fruit. No, Ellie. You're both adults so act like it. I walked over to Glenn, "How much for a fruit? All my secrets? The deed to my house?" I said jokingly. Glenn looked like he was going to have a panic attack. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and nervously asked, "Secrets? What secrets?" I reached for a peach and studied his body language. I was usually pretty good at picking up on stuff like that. Glenn was sweating, he seemed uneasy, and he was standing defensively. I also noticed he was avoiding looking at my face, but that could be because he hated my guts. Judging by these few signs I figured he must have been hiding something. "Glenn, is everything okay?" I asked with concern. Glenn walked over to a wooden table by a tent. I followed after him. He took a long breath as he set the fruit down.
I put my hand on his shoulder, "Glenn, you can talk to me. What's going on?" Glenn pulled his shoulder away turned to face me, "That's gold coming from you. You mean the way you talked to me? Hmm, the way you came to me instead of Daryl! Oh wait a minute, that was the other way around wasn't it?" I felt my blood start to boil, but I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. He was right to be mad. Ever since I first ran into him we had gotten super close. Glenn was like a brother to me. I lost my siblings when all this disease stuff happened, he was the closest thing I had to a family. "Glenn, I'm sorry." I sincerely apologized. Glenn started throwing his hands in the air, "No, Ellie. You just can't-- wait, what? You're sorry?" I looked around and saw that we had caught Lori's attention. I grabbed Glenns arm and pulled him away from the camp until it was no longer in view. I noticed a small log and I sat down, patting the spot next to me. I looked out towards the field, "Glenn. I'm going to tell you what happened at the C.D.C." Glenn walked over and sat down next to me. He was waiting for me to talk, but I didn't know what to say. How would he see me after this?
"Before I start, you have to promise not to tell anyone. Please." I looked at him to make sure he wasn't crossing his fingers or something. Glenn looked extremely uncomfortable. I nudged him, "I need you to promise." Glenn took his cap off and ran his fingers through his hair. He nodded his head, "I'll keep it a secret." I stuck my pinky out. He got a small grin on his face, "Are we really doing this?" I gave him the most serious look I had and nodded, "Oh we're doing this alright." He chuckled and wrapped his pinky around mine. I gave him an evil look, "You're bound for life Glenn Rhee." I turned to look down at the ground. Watching as the ants walked around my shoes. They had no idea that the world had gone to hell. I moved my foot so that one little ant could pick up a small piece of something that I had been stepping on. "Ellie?" Glenn shook me a little. I stood up and started pacing back and forth, "So do you remember when Jenner led us to our rooms and he was showing us around? Just nod if you do." I looked over as Glenn nodded slowly. I could tell he was confused and he had no idea where this was going. I kept pacing back and forth, "Well, that night something happened. Something horrible." I paused as Shane's face crept into my mind. I remembered the smell of liquor on his breath. I continued, "That night. I uh- I went to bed. I woke up to--" I trailed off as the memory of Shane's hands made my skin crawl with goosebumps. I started rubbing my arms trying to make them go away. I was getting too anxious to continue. It was hard having to live through it again, even if it was just reliving the memory. Glenn must have noticed because he stood up and made me stop pacing. He put his hands on my shoulders and made me look at his face. "Ellie, breathe. Calm down, just relax." He counted to one. *BREATHE* Two. *BREATHE* Three *BREATHE* After the third breath I was feeling calmer than before.
