Picking Daisies

I woke up the following morning to find Daryl nowhere in sight. I had stayed up most of the night just thinking about what Glenn had said. It was crazy to think that there were walkers in the barn and we had been oblivious to it. I sat up and took the hair tie out of my hair. My stomach grumbled as the smell of bacon and eggs floated into the tent. I could hear utensils hitting against plates. I unzipped the tent and walked out. I put my arms up into the air and stretched as I inhaled the smell of the delicious food. I stopped as I heard the noises from the plates stop. I turned around to find everyone in the group staring at me. Some had wide eyes and others had looks of disbelief on their faces. I felt my face turning some sort of pink or red shade from everyone's stares. I noticed Carol quickly turned to face away from me before I could catch a facial expression from her. T-Dog was sitting next to her and he just looked at me then at Daryl. I made eye contact with Daryl, he nodded at me before turning his attention back to his plate of scrambled eggs.  Andrea was giving me a dirty look and shaking her head. Lori looked surprised and Rick looked even more surprised, but he also looked distant. Shane was gritting his teeth while Dale stared at me with that look he always had on his face. Glenn stood up and quickly made his way over to me. I smiled as he gave me a hug, "Goodmorning." I said. Glenn let out a sigh and said, "It won't be after this..." He cleared his throat and turned to face the group. He rubbed his jaw nervously as he said, "Um, guys. So..." He looked around not knowing how to come out with it. I gave him a small nudge with my elbow as if telling him to go on. He took a deep breath and quickly said, "The barn is full of walkers." Everyone was shocked at first, but not for long. They started bombarding him with questions and when he couldn't answer them they immediately dropped what they were doing and started making their way to the barn.

Rick and Shane were leading the group followed by Daryl, Andrea, Carol, T-dog, Dale, Lori, and Carl. I walked with Glenn all the way at the end of the group. Everyone seemed a little pissed off at him, except for Dale. I looked over at him and asked, "You okay?" He was looking down at the ground as we walked. He nodded, "Yeah." Glenn smiled and looked up at me, "Hey Ellie, you know what I think would have been best?" I wiped some sweat off my forehead and responded with, "If the world miraculously went back to normal?" Glenn bent over and picked up a stone, he was throwing it up in the air and catching it as we neared the barn. Glenn gave me a small little smile as he said, "Well aside from that, I think I should have given my announcement before you came out of Daryl's tent. That way the attention wouldn't have been so harsh on me." I could feel my face turn red and it wasn't because of the hot sun. I wiped my sweat off my forehead again, I was tired of wearing long-sleeved shirts. I chuckled a bit, "I honestly doubt that would have made a difference Glenn." Glenn handed me his water bottle, "I think you made quite an entrance Ell." I took a huge sip of water and swished it around in my mouth as I tried to think of what to say. I wiped my sweat again. "Ugh, I hate the heat." Glenn stopped, he took his cap off his head and placed it on mine, "There you go. That should keep the sun off your head." Glenn's cap felt a little damp. It must have been from his sweat. I didn't say anything other than thanks because I didn't want to offend his kind gesture. Glenn looked at my shirt, "You should try wearing a shirt with shorter sleeves." I rubbed my wrists, the thought of someone seeing what was under my sleeves send my mind into a panic.

Glenn was wearing a thin purple flannel shirt over his t-shirt. He took it off and handed it to me, "Oh right. Here, try this on. It will be way lighter than that long-sleeve you've got on. Damn Ellie, I'm burning just looking at you wearing it." I chuckled and grabbed the shirt he was offering me. I walked over by a tree that was nearby and looked over at Glenn, "Keep an eye out, yeah?" He nodded and turned away as if he was guarding the entrance to a castle. I took my shirt off as fast as I could and threw the purple flannel shirt on. I instantly felt the difference and smiled as I buttoned up the shirt. I walked over to Glenn as I tried to shove the old shirt in my back pocket. Glenn turned and stuck his hand out, "I can carry it if you'd like." I shook my head, "No, it's fine. I'm capable." Glenn grabbed the shirt and tied it around his neck like a cape. I started laughing, but stopped as I saw Andrea walking up to us.
