After finally escaping that extensive prison of a hideout, Wolfe and I walk for what seems like miles on end in the direction someone in the hideout had tipped us to head to.
Of course, we are dragging our feet the whole time because of how tired we are. Anyone would be expectant of the way we nearly collapse when the day grows darker than it already is.
"It must be time for a rest. This seems like a nice place for the night." Wolfe sighs, his words clinging to the still, chilly air. "Lie down, why don't you? You know you're tired."
Giving in after walking for hours, I situate myself in a gaping area that spreads in between two large roots, of which belong to the tallest and widest tree we've seen all day. Wolfe smiles down at me after I lay in the hard dirt and clumps of grass, but then looks away when leaves rustle in the distance.
My body jerks at the sound, though my mind tries to block it out because of the tiredness that overcomes my senses and thoughts.
Wolfe's eyes scan the dense forest, his fists balled up. He glances at me again, his concerned icy eyes making my heart flutter.
"We don't have any weapons." He reminds me with a shameful shake of the head. "We will just have to stay low and hope nothing crosses our path."
I nod, but feel my body begin to shake. When I realize that my lips are trembling and my teeth are chattering, I look to Wolfe to see if he is in the same frozen state. He sees this, and his mouth wavers, his caring blue eyes putting me on a double-take.
"Dear God!" He whispers, bends down, and then crawls over to me in the dim night.
He wraps his thick arms around me and slides over beside me. Our legs tangle together as if they've done it a million times before, and my head finds its way onto Wolfe's warm chest.
Above, the canopy stares down at us, leaves hissing, creating a haunting melody.
I let the veil of my eyelids slide over my stinging eyes, ridding me of any light. I release the tension in all of my muscles, my body becoming limp against Wolfe's body.
Wolfe's heartbeat thuds in my ringing ears, the steady beat a rhythm I could listen to forever.
"It was so brave of you to divert those men's attention away from your sister." Wolfe whispers in his deep, hushed voice. "But, it was very dangerous."
I lift my right hand up and over until it comfortably rests on Wolfe's chest. In return, his muscular chest falters as it rises, as if his heart skipped a beat.
"You do the things you have to for the people you love, I guess." I yawn, nestling my head closer to his. "You know?"
"I know." He replies as he lets his right arm pull me closer, his fingers rubbing the side of my cold arm mesmerizingly.
