"His name was Ulysses. Ulysses Renbryant. He was valiant and true, and the best friend anyone could have ever had." Princess Aphmau whispered.
A single tear fell from one of her eyes. Aaron held her hand tighter.
He had been their secret. Everyday since they were young children, Princess Aphmau and Aaron had visited Ulysses. They would sit down for a chat and a cup of tea, discussing anything and everything. Ulysses had loved books. His favorite was the Tale of Agrno the Brave. Aphmau would sneak books from the royal library to him and he would read to Aphmau and Aaron all day. But they had to grow up, and growing up meant less visits.
Aphmau was next in line for the throne. For as beautiful as she was, suitors came from far and wide to beg for her hand in marriage. But she only had eyes for Aaron.
Aaron became a guard. Training and patrols took up most of his time, yet he always found time to visit Ulysses with Aphmau. He always had time for Aphmau.
Their visits with their beloved friend kept them close. They loved Ulysses with all their hearts, and he loved them as they were his own children. Because really, he had been more of a parent to them than their biological parents ever had.
Tu'la had declared war on Phoenix Drop, and Aaron was sent to fight. Aphmau watched the boat carrying him leave, and everyday she would watch for the boat to come back.
After a month of waiting for her true love, Aphmau began to visit Ulysses everyday once again, for he reminded her of Aaron. She would spend all her time there, only coming home for food and clothes.
Her parents became worried for her. They begged her to tell them where she was going, but she refused. So, they sent out a proclamation declaring that anyone who could find where she was going would win her hand in marriage.
The first was Prince Laurence. He had always been deeply in love with Princess Aphmau, even though she did not love him back. He followed her in secret, and found her with Ulysses.
He thought Ulysses was forcing her to bring him things for his hoard. Jumping out of the bushes, Laurence roared a battle cry and attacked. He fought bravely and valiantly, ignoring Aphmau screams for him to stop.
There Ulysses lay, dead as could be.
Aaron returned from battle that very day. He headed to Ulysses' cave, where they had agreed to meet. But instead of finding a cheerful Aphmau and Ulysses chatting away, he found Aphmau crying over Ulysses' lifeless body.
Prince Laurence went home in shame after being informed of what he did. It hurt him too much to see the princess he had loved so much crying over her dead best friend, the one he had killed.
Aphmau cried for days and days.
She had loved that dragon.
