"What's going on in here?" Mama asked.
I could imagine all the wild scenarios in her head as she stood, staring down at us, wearing a black night gown, looking every bit like an avenging angel.

Lucas had somehow managed to turn us around during the fall, encasing me in his strong arms, not minding his injured shoulder.

"Is something the matter, Antoinette?"
Her blonde hair teased her shoulders as she nodded at uncle Vincentè. He was dressed in a black shirt and black tailored trousers.

Uncle Vincentè took one look at Lucas and I on the floor and frowned.

"Get up from the floor," he growled.

I quickly pulled out of Lucas' arms and rushed to mama's side. She took my hand in hers tightly, her long red painted nails digging painfully into my palm. I was in trouble.

"You will do well to know your place," Uncle Vincentè said darkly to Lucas.

Lucas nodded and excused himself, walking stiffly to the living room. His bandage was stained red.

"And you," uncle Vincentè turned to me, "I don't know what they taught you in those boarding schools you attended but here in this house, women respect themselves. They don't throw themselves into the arms of any willing idiot."

"That wasn't what happened. I tripped and he prevented me from getting hurt. That's it," I said. How could he think that of me? Not once had I given him or anyone else any reason to think of me in such a manner.

"I don't care what the hell you said happened," he said, his face turning red.
Mama stood between us and he stopped in his advance towards me.

"Protect her all you want, Antoinette," he said, "but eventually you are going to see what I see." He looked at me over her frail shoulders. "A treacherous little bitch who'll lead us all like lambs to the slaughter house to our deaths. I don't trust her. I never have."

"Stay away from my daughter, Vincentè," mama said softly. Yet her voice sent shivers down my spine.
"Stay away from temptation because if you hurt her, the blessed Virgin Mary herself will not stand in the way of my vengence. I'll kill you." She pointed at the spot between her eyes. "I'll send a bullet right through your skull."

He nodded stiffly and walked away.
