Lunch was awkward. Laurentia spent more time glaring at me than eating her food while Claudia, Antonio's sister, stared at me like I was some new specie.
"Tony," Laurentia said suddenly breaking the silence at the table.
"Antonio," he corrected. "My name is Antonio."
"Let's go riding today. I haven't ridden the horse you bought for me in a long time and honestly I think she needs the exercise."
"Perhaps another day," he said
"Why not today?"
"I have business."
"You have skipped business for me before."
"I am a man prone to constant change."
"Tony,"
She leaned on the table and bit her bottom lip."Fuck off. You are beginning to piss me off," he said.
Claudia paused briefly before going back to her meal. I could see the guards at the entrance of the dinning room fiddle with their guns.
"Irene, how are you feeling?" Claudia asked in an attempt to diffuse the tense air.
"I'm alright."
"It hurts a lot to lose a parent and a guardian."
"It does."
Claudia nodded.
"I know how you feel. I refused to come out of my room for days after the burial of my parents until Antonio dragged me out and threatened to send me to boarding school. That was years ago. I was just fifteen."
"I'm sorry."
She waved her hand.
"Like I said, it was a long time ago."
Antonio cleared his throat as he stood from his seat.
"Meet me in my office after you are done eating, Irene. Laurentia will show you the way. Excuse me, Ladies. I have some business to take care of," he said, then walked out of the dining room.
I took a sip from my glass of white wine. "You can lead me to the office now, Laurentia."
Laurentia dropped her fork on the plate with a loud clank.
"He just left. I'm sure you can catch up with him.""I'm afraid I'll get lost."
I didn't know her well but she was so easy to piss off."He did say you should accompany her," Claudia said.
If I didn't know any better I'd think she was enjoying the constipated look on Laurentia's face as much as I did.
Laurentia stood and gestured to me.
"Well, what are you waiting for?"
I smiled as I stood.
"Thank you so much dearest Laurentia for helping a poor girl out," I said.
If I had to stay here, Laurentia was going to be my amusement toy.
*******************
"I don't like you," Laurentia said as we stood in infront of Antonio's office."I know. But for the life of me I can't imagine why," I said.
At least she was honest. A lot of people I knew turned out to be vipers.
She glared at me and turned, walking away on her high heeled shoes.
I knocked on the door.
"Come in."
I pushed open the door and walked in.
Antonio was standing next to the window, a glass of whiskey in his hand."Don't tell me this is how you conduct your meetings, Antonio."
I sat on the chair infront of a huge desk. "Because that will be frightening."He laughed as he walked to his desk and placed the glass down.
"Well luckily for you, this is just me thinking."
"Thinking? About what?"
"I'd hate to frighten you with my thoughts. They can be quiet morbid."
"Please, amuse me," I said, reaching for his glass of whiskey. I longed for the sensation of the hard liquor running down my throat like fire. I rarely drunk but if I had to play with fire, I'd rather play hard.
"Perhaps some other time."
I emptied the glass in one shot.
Fuck! That felt good.
"Your mother, how is she?"
"She's doing well. She prefered the motel to your estate."
"I admire your mother," he said. "She's strong and daring."
I nodded.
"Yeah. She is, isn't she."
He gazed at me strangely.
"And I'll be forever grateful to her. She saved your life."
I glanced at the window. Damnit! Don't do this.
"Yeah. Me too."
He walked round the table to my side.
"Though I wish I had been the one to swoop in and save the day."
"That would have caused a lot of problems."
"Yeah. But girls love that sort of thing. Take Laurentia for example. I save her from her abusive boyfriend and now she thinks we are in a sort of relationship."
"Not every girl acts like Laurentia."
"I take it shooting your uncle between the eyes will not be welcomed then?"
I smiled.
"That," I nodded, "that I'll like. But I'll love it even more if you hand me the head of my father's killer on a platter of gold."
He stared at me straight and hard.
"That can be arranged."
