"Antonio has captured uncle Vincenté," I said to mama over the phone as I looked out the window. I was worried as to what her reaction would be. She was fickle. One moment she could be happy and the next moment, she could be as angry as a lioness.
"What? How can that be possible? Paulo has made no announcements concerning this?" I could almost feel her disbelieve oozing out of her through the phone. "Are you sure about this?"
"I saw him with my own eyes, mama. They are torturing him. Antonio claims he's responsible for father's death."
"Vincenté is a toothless wolf. He couldn't have ordered the hit on your father. He's too cowardly for that."
"Antonio seemed certain in his claim," I told her softly. "I don't want him dead. Despite everything, he's still family."
She remained silent for a while as I paced in front of the bed.
"Relax, baby," she says gently and for a moment, it reminded me of my childhood when she run her soft hands through my hair as the storm raged on outside. "He won't die. Tell Antonio to let him go. Tell him you want to forget everything about your father's death and only live in the moment. He'll listen to you."
I slumped onto the bed. "I don't want to forget." How could I ever forget? I didn't want my father's death to go unpunished. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let this opportunity pass me by.
"Then push aside your sentiment and focus on the goal. Vincenté might be innocent but whoever ordered the killing of your father could still be a member of our family. When the moment of truth is upon us, I need to know you'll be able to do what is demanded of you."
"You have your suspicions," I said. "You talk like you do."
"I do. The question before us now is are you ready to deliver justice to our enemies or do you want to hide?"
"Mama," I breathed heavily. I was hesitant. I didn't want to submerge myself in blood and yet, at the same time, I couldn't not avenge my father's death.
"Answer me, Irene. Will you stand by me when the time comes?"
"Yes," I answered softly without conviction. I was shamed of myself. And I know mama was ashamed of me too.
