She didn't understand. Everything she'd taught me when I was a child had stuck with me throughout my journey into adulthood. Even though I refused to depend on it, it still reflected in some things I did.
"I know," I said, "just like I also know that I do not want to spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. I know you do not like Antonio and I understand that. But you must also understand me. We have no where else to go. Your family back in France want nothing to do with you and our only family left are after our lives."
I took a deep breath.
"You want revenge, mama. I want vengeance too. I believe our answer lies within Antonio's fortress and the only way to get it is to get inside."
"When did you grow up, my baby girl?" Mama said as she stared at me.
"I don't like the idea of sending you alone to that man's house. But I believe in you and I believe that you know what you are doing..."
"I'm not going to be alone. You'll be with me. You and Lucas and that bald headed man."
"You will be alone. Lucas and I can take care of ourselves including that bald headed man as you so rudely put it."
I ducked my head and blushed.
"I'm sorry, mama."
"Antonio probably thinks of you as an ignorant, naive little girl. I doubt he would feel comfortable with us all breathing down his neck."
She stood and ran her hand through her hair.
"We must plan. Lucas and I will check up on our chinese and American counterparts. David will roam the streets looking for information. We have reason to believe that your grandfather's assasin is a trusted member of the family. What you have to do until we can take control of the family business is to stick to the code I'm about to tell you. The code of Silence and Submission. It's a code every woman in our family has stuck to."
"What is it?"
"Know when to be speak. Know when to kill. Know when to observe. And know when to submit. It gives you an edge. It creates an aura of naiveity around you and makes men underestimate you and that is the greatest weapon you can have. Do you understand what I mean?"
I nodded.
"Yes, mama," I said.
She sat down and smiled. A hard, cold smile.
"Everything is starting to fall into place."
Short chapter, I know. But this is a continuation of the previous chapter. I'm terribly sorry for the delay and I hope you enjoy this chapter. Enjoy!!!!!
