“Oh hey Becky! So good to see you!” replied Cassie with a big grin spread across her face.
“Hi...Cassie.” I said hesitantly. “We did come around before but you weren’t in so...” I said turning to Denise and Tony.
“Oh yeah. Well my car broke down so Tony came and picked me up from town.”
“What the hell Tony? Seriously you must be out of your mind thinking of going with her!” Liam shrieked.
“Bro as much as you think you might know everything about her and me...you don’t Cassie’s changed. You went out with her a long, long time ago.”
“This is Cassie we’re talking about Tony! She doesn’t change. God when are you going to see that? You should know better.”
I didn’t say anything. I didn’t want to add to the already escalating argument; the neighbours including Mrs Parkins were watching us and I didn’t want to fall out with Tony before the wedding. I didn’t know him all that well so didn’t want to get on his wrong side before we’d even got to know each other.
I stepped forward to Liam and whispered to him calmly putting my hand on his shoulder. “Liam I think we should take this inside hon’...we’re attracting attention.”
He looked around and saw people looking at us although when they saw that he was staring at them they quickly searched around for something to do. Which to be honest was pointless.
“Your engaged?” Denise said seeing the ring on my finger. I looked down at it and then back to her. I could see it the corner of my eye that the neighbours attention was again with us.
“Uh yeah...” I smiled. “Yesterday we got engaged yesterday!”
“Well congratulations guys. How the hell did you manage to get that out of him? I’ve been trying to control Liam for years but never got anywhere!”
I laughed. “She doesn’t need to control me mum. I love her and I wanted this just as much as she does.”
Me and Denise both looked at Liam in shock. Where was all this coming from? Within the last twenty four hours he was being and acting more romantic than I had ever seen him be before. In some ways it was quite scary but I liked the new Liam and loved him even more. Again I didn’t think that was actually possible but it was.
I could see Liam looking to Tony for approval. “Yeah congrats...just I wish you could be as happy for me as I am for you!”
Liam didn’t say anything but I could see him shaking slightly most likely with anger so I quickly butt in and said “Yeah he is Tony, we both are.” Which I have to say was lying but it seemed like the best way to settle the argument.
Liam looked back glaring at me. It was blatantly obvious he wasn’t happy for them and didn’t like the fact that I had stepped in to answer for him. But he let it go as did his brother. We followed Liam’s mum Denise into the house and then into the living room.
We were chatting or rather making small talk with each other about random wedding details. But the whole time I couldn’t help but wonder what Tony saw in Cassie. I mean yeah so was pretty and everything but she was a famously known for being controlling and bitchy. I could tell that Liam was feeling the same. He wasn’t speaking much at all in fact I had to take up his share of the conversation myself.
A question was bubbling up inside me and I knew that both me and Liam wanted to ask but neither of us were sure whether to or not. My stomach was in knots and every time I opened my mouth to ask it, I would shut it again.
But then suddenly I plucked up enough courage to ask “So...when did you two get together?”
Liam perked up at bit, sitting up straighter and more alert.
