The next morning she woke up to find the bed beside her empty.

"What did I do?" She asked out loud. She stretched and yawned and headed down the hall to her bathroom. "Should have known he would leave." She said to herself.

"He didn't go anywhere. Well except to make breakfast." John said smiling because Shadow nearly jumped out of her skin.

"You scared the shit out of me!"

"Hurry up sleepy head, or your food will be cold." He said smiling. She went into the bathroom and washed her face. She stared at herself in the mirror for a bit.

"Okay. You can do this. It won't be weird. Just act normal." She grabbed her full length cotton robe and went out to the kitchen, where John had sat the table and had everything ready.

"I wasn't sure what you would like, so I cooked a little of everything." He sat looking at the table.

"I see that. You know, I don't normally eat real food." She said smartly, but with a smile.

"Oh well. I guess there's more for me then." He said smiling back at her. "So you don't, won't, or can't?" He asked loading his plate.

"What?" She asked pouring her some coffee.

"Eat." He said with at mouthful of eggs.

"Oh well, scared to really. I haven't eaten in so long, I'm not sure if my body can digest it and stuff normally."

"Oh but it's good. You should try it. Even just a bite?"

"Okay, but if it makes me deathly ill you will have to stay and take care of me. And I am not a good patient." She said sternly.

"Deal." He put one of everything on her plate. She eyed it closely for a bit, then picked up her fork and tried the eggs.

"Well?" he asked smiling.

"Nothing bad so far. I can't really taste it though." She said with a hint of sadness.

"Well it's because you haven't eaten in so long, your taste buds have forgotten. Eat some more, you'll see."

"Maybe." She nibbled and picked at everything until it was gone. Her whole plate empty. "You were right. All I needed was a few bites. I can taste everything and its delicious." She shoveled more food onto her plate.

"Whoa! Slow down. You keep eating like that and I'm going to be broke." He said laughing. She gave him a mean look, which only made him laugh harder, because she had a mouthful of sausage.

After all the food was gone, they did the dishes.

"What time is it anyway?" Shadow asked.

"Noon, I think. Why?"

"Why? We are so late for work! What's wrong with you?" Shadow took off down the hall to her room and flung open her closet. She was still throwing clothes around when John came in.

"Shadow, calm down. I called the boss and told him everything." She stopped tossing clothes on the floor.

"Everything?"

"Well not everything. I told him we would be in late. You needed a break and he agreed."

"Lord everyone is going to know if we come in late together." She said covering her face with her hands.

"Is that so bad? We can go in separately, if you want. Everyone will just think I had a hangover. Won't be the first time I was late." He said sadly, gathering his clothes and going to the bathroom.
