chapter 10

"You guys ready?" Marc asked in a whisper.

Acheron and Cayden nodded. The boys gathered their things and quietly left the house.

"Are you sure we should be doing this? I mean we lied to our parents." Cayden said looking back.

"Yes, you know as well as I do that will go in guns blazing and John will not wait for them. We have to go now." Acheron said.

Drake watched his son walk away into the night without looking back.

"Good luck, son." He whispered to the darkness.

The next evening the men made final plans and women made food to take on their journey.

"I know that I'm not the only one who realizes that the boys left after we went to bed last night." Tess said angrily.

"Yes." Roman said quietly. "They appear to have gone towards the red entrance. We should leave as soon as everyone is ready." Roman finished looking around the room.

Everyone inhaled some food, then gathered up what they were taking.

"If there are things you need to take that might be too big or heavy, bring it to me and I'll take care of it." Tess announced as everyone ran around.

"So how will it work?' Shadow asked handing her a huge bag of weapons.

"I'm going to shrink it down, then add a personal touch to it. You'll be able to carry it like a purse or something. When you pull a weapon out it will recognize your touch and become full size. It will be fast so be prepared for that." Tess said seriously.

"Don't worry about me. Just don't get in my way when I shoot." Shadow said taking her bag for Tess and walking away. Tess smiled weakly and walked over to Rylan.

"I'm worried about Shadow. She seems angry and emotionless." She whispered.

"Honey, she is dealing with a lot. Her husband is the son of the beast and her son is the only one with the powers to bring the boys together and become strong enough to kill him. How would you feel?" Rylan whispered back. Tess sighed and shook her head.

Everyone gathered in the living room and waited.

"Does everyone have everything they need? Do one more check, then we will go." Roman said checking his own things.

Once everyone checked their bags, Roman opened the front door and headed out. He was followed by Tess and Rylan, Drake and Twilight, and then Shadow. They walked single file in the same directions the boys had left in. Their senses on high alert, they moved at a brisk pace. Roman stopped suddenly.

"Sorry. We are about a quarter mile from the town. Keep your eyes open and weapons ready. Let's move." He said quietly moving forward.

The town seemed to be empty. No lights on and no sounds except for a few crickets.

"It's too quiet here. I don't like it." Tess said.

"Me either. City hall should be on the next block." Roman said quietly. They picked up the pace and jogged to the next street. Just as everyone expected, there were four guards at the city hall front door.

"I've got this." Shadow said smiling. She pulled a crossbow out of her bag, waited for it to become full size and place four arrows on it. "Whichever one of you can control things, I'm going to need your help. I can get the two on the inside, no problem, but the other two on the outside are too far out of my range." Shadow said kneeling.
