JUNE 2016

"You okay, Nicomaine?"

Maine's train of thoughts suddenly went to a stop when Jacob called her. Okay, perhaps it wasn't a train of thoughts; it was an unending river flowing out to the ocean, unceasingly pulling her in.

She gave him a small nod and then proceeded to finish her meal.

She was at the dela Rosa's for dinner, just like she promised. She was a bit late (exactly seventeen minutes late) but the family understood that she had a lot going on and waited for her to arrive. She knew that they were expecting her to tell them about her day and how she was with recording and everything but she didn't. It was impolite; she knew that. But she couldn't bring herself to tell them about today. She couldn't even think properly.

"Anyway," Jacob said, making Maine turn to them. "Ma, Maine is going to record her second song this week."

"Really?" Janice dela Rosa asked, enthralled. "I'm so proud of you, Maine! Which song will you be recording?"

You see, Jacob was really close to his family. Maine wasn't jealous or envious about this; she was happy that Jacob was very much family oriented. She had always wanted to talk about her music to her family, but because of everything that had happened three years ago, she couldn't even talk to them about her career. She doubts that anyone in her family even knew what she's been up to. Well, perhaps her sisters knew about her and Alden Richards but had no idea that it was only for publicity. On the other hand, Jacob's family knew a lot about him—his music, his career, his future; everything. They knew every song he wrote, considering that before he let anyone listen to the demo, he'd always make his whole family—including Maine and his dogs—hear it first. His mother knew about his whereabouts and even he was already 22, he still lived at home with his family and asked for permission, even if his father insisted that he could do whatever he wanted. He still drives his little (but not so little) sister to the university she studies at and sends her annoying big brother texts often.

And Maine was lucky that she got to be a part of Jacob's life.

Maine looked at Jacob, who had a huge grin on his face, before she responded to his mother. "I'm not yet sure, tita. Jade and Tristan are still contemplating whether it'd be If You Stay or Set You Free."

"Maganda 'yung Set You Free," Ulysses dela Rosa, Jacob's father, added. "Tapos na ba yung final list for the album?"

Maine answered, telling them that they'd have to record every song first before they could choose the set of songs to be added on the album. They asked her a lot of things, but she didn't mind: they were family.

When dinner was over, and Jacob and Maine were tasked to wash the dishes tonight, Maine decided that it was the right time to tell Jacob about her troubles.

"So, he's an asshole then?" Jacob asked while he dried the plates and Maine washed. "I knew it. The media's right, Nicomaine. Alam naman ng lahat na ganun 'yun, kahit ganun pa siya kasikat at kagaling sa pagiging actor, he isn't perfect."

"Alam ko naman 'yun," Maine answered, handing Jacob another plate. "It was just that I expected him to be less asshole-ish when we're together."

"It's only for publicity naman diba?" Jacob asked, making Maine nod. "Then that isn't a problem. You don't have to like him and he doesn't have to like you."
