JULY 2016

Maine stayed in Bulacan for four days.

On the first day of her unplanned and impulsive vacation, her Tatay asked if she didn't have to go to work. She lied, telling them that she was able to file a four-day leave. When Coleen came home from a small company she worked in as an accountant, she hugged her tightly—so tight that Maine had to physically push her away because she couldn't breathe. During dinner, they asked her about work, and finally, finally, she told them about Alden and the publicity stunt. She didn't tell them he was the reason why she came home with sad eyes and lost thoughts. She lied to them and told them he was a great person to work with and that they shouldn't worry about her because they had a lot more things to worry about. Dean had just started studying in a small community college in their town and Coleen had just been promoted so she needed to focus more on her job. That night, Nikki video-called them, but Maine refused to see her sister through a screen. Maine slept on her brother's room, where he peacefully slept with cold hands and steady heartbeat, on a chair beside his bed and her hands clutched on his the whole night.

On the second day, she went to the market with Dean. A lot of people recognized her, but she refused to even look at them or acknowledge their calls. She just walked passed through them because honestly, she came home to forget about everything back in the metro and not to be reminded every second that she had to go back at some point. During lunch, Dean's phone rang, revealing Jacob's name. Maine had told Dean not to accept calls from anyone who wanted to speak to her the moment she arrived in Bulacan, but apparently, Jacob was an exception. Dean reluctantly told Jacob that yes, Maine was home, but then Jacob was already halfway to Bulacan as they spoke. After lunch, Jacob was already at their doorstep with carnations in his hands and a smile on his face. That night, Maine slept on the couch with her head on top of Jacob's chest and her heart filled with gratitude for her best friend.

The third day came and Jacob had to leave in the morning after breakfast because his trip to Bulacan was as impulsive as Maine's and he wasn't able to tell his mom about it—not that Janice would mind, she knew her son well. Apparently, Jacob brought Maine's old iPod with him the day before, so he left it to her along with its charger and earphones. Maine smiled, with the iPod clutched in her hand, while she waved at Jacob when he left their home. He really knew her so well. He knew what he needed to bring from the metro—her iPod, because that's what can only comfort her more than his voice telling her that it was going to be okay and singing her to sleep. That day, her Tatay tried to help when she and Dean prepared their lunch, only to topple the ingredients down and spill the liquids on the floor. He cried, sobbed and apologized over and over again for being a useless father, and like always, Maine just hugged him and told him it was okay. When lunch was over, Maine went to his Kuya's room and let out the tears that had been struggling to be freed when their father cried. That night, Faye called from Dean's phone, and Maine finally accepted a call from someone in the metro and told Faye that she was coming back the day after.

In the morning of her fourth and last day, Coleen claimed that she had no work and suggested that they should spend some time outside. Maine protested—got angry—and told her that it was a stupid idea to just leave their Kuya at home. Dean said that someone from the neighborhood is always willing to stay in and look out for Nico. Maine got angrier and reminded them that they no longer had a housekeeper (Pe was with them for a while after the accident, but they had to force her to leave because they no longer had enough money to pay her. Pe insisted that it was okay, but after some time, Teodoro was able to convince her to just leave.) and no one was trustworthy enough. She cried in front of them, no longer able to keep everything inside. Coleen had convinced her to go out and assured her that everything was going to be okay. They left using Coleen's old car—the only thing she was able to save when everything was taken from them—and went to the beach they used to go as a family. Dean pushed their Tatay's wheelchair and Coleen and Maine walked hand in hand with a basket of food they prepared. Maine wanted to cry again, because the last time they went to this beach, their Nanay and Pe prepared the food; Nico and Dean carried the portable beach tables with chairs; they Tatay drove; Coleen and Maine took pictures. She could only wish that those moments could happen again. She could only wish.
