JULY 2016

If there was one thing that Maine dislikes the most, it was going shopping with Jacob.

Jacob was her best friend, yeah, and she'd die for him any day for any cause, but she would never, in a million years, admit that shopping with him was fun. Between Maine and Jacob, he was the shopaholic—if you can call him that. Maine couldn't understand why he needed a new pair of pants every week, and why he had to try on twelve pants of the same color and same fit before he could decide what he really wanted.

Maine sat on the floor, outside the cubicle where Jacob tried the identical pairs of jeans. She was laughing to herself while she watched Jacob struggle from where she sat. She could see his sock-covered foot up until halfway between his knees and ankles.

"Stop laughing, Nicomaine," Jacob murmured upon hearing Maine cough her laughter out. "This is a serious matter."

"You literally are trying on twelve pants of the same color and fit. Ang arte mo, Jacob," Maine answered. "I can see you struggling. Sobrang fitted kasi."

"That's why—ugh—they're called—oomf—'skinny' jeans, Nicomaine," he struggled to say. "Nakakita ka na ba ng skinny jeans na maluwang?"

"Tanggapin mo na kasi," Maine said. "Na hindi ka na size 33."

"Nicomaine!" Jacob scolded from inside, making Maine laugh. "Magda-diet na ulit ako, bully."

"Hey," Maine frowned. "I never said anything about you going back to your old lifestyle." Maine saw that Jacob had started removing the skin-tight trouser off him.

"I'm sorry puberty made me fat," Jacob mumbled.

"Hey, you were never fat!"

"'Wag ako, Nicomaine," Jacob said, while he started to pull his own pants up. "This whole career thing is distracting me from maintaining my diet. Nakakstress ka kasi."

"Wow, ako pa ngayon? I didn't ask you to write songs for me," Maine said and stood up as she waited for Jacob to come out of the cubicle.

"Sige," Jacob said while he picked up the pants from the floor. "Ibalik mo lahat."

"Finders keepers," Maine quoted.

"Anong 'finders keepers'?" Jacob asked. "Binigay ko, uy. Now I'm taking it back." He opened the door, while he steadied the pile of trousers using his other hand. "Help."

"Ayoko nga," Maine said, turning around to face the aisle and stepping out of the fitting section.

"Nicomaine," Jacob pouted and walked behind her. "Please."

Maine laughed and flicked his forehead, then took a couple out of the pile that Jacob was carrying. "Kasi naman," she said. "Four to five lang ang allowed na itry sa fitting section. Tapos isang dosena ang kinuha mo."

"They'll never know," he laughed.

"Not if I tell them," Maine teased.

"Ah, ganon..." Jacob said, and then launched himself to Maine, tickling her in the process.
