JUNE 2016

Maine wanted to die.

This morning, when she woke up and got a call from her sister about... their family's condition and about her eldest sister's struggles abroad, she didn't want to die. In fact, she wanted to live longer and stronger so that she could help all of them get through this one hell of a roller coaster ride they call life. When she made breakfast and her stove almost lit up with fire (because it was old and rusty), she didn't want to die. She just wanted to work harder so that she could buy herself a better stove. When her manager called her that she couldn't pick her up for work because her baby was sick, she didn't want to die. She was just praying that the baby will get better soon because she literally had no idea what to do without Kim. When she figured out it was impossible to get a ride at this time of the morning, especially since it was heavily raining, she still did not want to die.

But then her lunch date with her stupid, inconsiderate and heartless excuse of a boyfriend came, and now she wanted to die.

Maine did not know—she swore she didn't—that Alden took their stupid argument last night so seriously.

And this is how it went.

When she stepped inside the restaurant that Kim had told her, she tried her best to look as presentable as she can. She combed her wet hair with her fingers and left her umbrella on the corner where it should be. She walked through the restaurants, passing every table with surprised faces, and found Alden on the corner. When she got to where he was, she mustered up a small smile, half-expecting that Alden would stand and maybe give her a quick kiss on the cheek.

"H-hi," she greeted with a smile and hope that he had forgiven her for what she said the day before. "Sorry I'm late. I got caught up in the studio tapos umulan pa."

Alden glared at her and then continued reading the menu.

She shrugged her damp coat from her shoulders and laid it on her chair's arm rest. She sat down, thinking of how she could survive this lunch date again.

When the waitress arrived with a huge grin on her face and asked them what they wanted, Alden monotonously spoke and told her he'd have two of the chef's choice along with two glasses of iced tea. The waitress listed them down and gathered the menus from their table, leaving Maine no time to protest about the order.

"What was that?" Maine asked with a frown. "Hindi ko man lang nakita yung menu."

"You were late," Alden answered, leaning back against the chair and reaching for his phone. "You don't deserve to choose what you'll eat."

"Saan galing 'yan?" Maine asked. "Was that a part of the deal?"

"No," Alden said. "But I'll do what I want."

Maine rubbed her forehead, frustrated. "What happened to trying to make this work?"

"I'll do what I want."

Maine was growing sick of this, of the star's stupid mood swings. She did not expect him to be nice to her at all times, but after what happened at the amusement park, she hoped that he'd be a little less mean to her.

"Okay, Al—" she stopped herself from saying his name. They weren't friends yet, therefore they weren't on the first-name basis stage. "If this is about my attitude yesterday, I'm sorry okay? Iniisip ko lang naman yung iisipin ng tao. Alam kong OA yung reaksyon, so I'm saying sorry. Sorry, okay?"
