AUGUST 2016

"Bakit nga ulit ako pumayag?"

Maine frowned when Alden only chuckled as a response. Her back was badly aching and she had been sitting uncomfortably for about an hour now. The songs from Alden's playlist had been repeated twice now, and she was growing tired of it (although she liked the one called You or Nothing).

When Alden called the day before, she did not expect him to ask her something as huge of a deal as this one. She clearly remembers how the conversation went.

"Do you think you can do me a huge favor?" he asked through the phone.

Maine was tying her hair in a messy bun when she answered his call and the tie was between her teeth, so her words were a little muffled.

"What favor?"

"Are you free tomorrow?" he asked, not answering what Maine asked.

"No," she said. She wasn't lying; she really wasn't free tomorrow. She had laundry to do in the morning, and then a lunch meeting, and then grocery shopping.

She heard Alden sigh from the other line and mumble something incoherent. "Ano bang favor?"

"Hihiramin sana kita for a day," he said, a little louder this time.

"Hihiramin?" she repeated and Alden hummed yes. "Gamit ba ako? Bakit mo ako hihiramin?"

"To have lunch with my family. Sige na, pumayag ka na," he said. "Pinipilit kasi ako ni Dad."

"Bakit kailangan mo pa ako isama?" she asked.

"Ayoko ngang kausapin si Kuya," he mumbled, but Maine heard.

"Then you have your sister," she responded with a frown. "At tsaka, kahit naman pumayag ako, hindi talaga ako free bukas."

"Ano bang gagawin mo bukas?"

"Marami nga," she said.

"Kahit half day lang tayo," he compromised. "We'll go there in the morning, have lunch and then leave."

"Bakit nga kasi kailangan mo ng kasama?" she asked again.

"Lam mo na 'yun," he mumbled. "Sige na."

"Eh may mga gagawin nga ako," she answered. "Tsaka may lunch meeting ako with Kim an—"

"Ako na ang bahala kay Kim," he quickly said. "Ano pa?"

"Maglalaba pa ako," she reasoned out.

"Wala ka na bang damit?" he asked, irritated now. "Di ba pwedeng sa isang araw mo na gawin? O ngayon? Di mo ba malalabhan ngayon?"

"May recording ako in half an hour," she said.

For a moment, she wondered how this happened. A couple of months ago, they disliked each other to death—well, she didn't dislike him—and couldn't stand next to each other without starting a war. And now, they were on the phone, casually talking to each other and asking favors. She definitely did not see this coming.

"Wait," she said as she thought of a great idea. "Payag na ako!"

"Really?" he asked. "Okay, I'll pick you up to—"
