Chapter 18: Gone Too Soon
Not a day goes by
That I don't think of you
I'm always asking why this crazy world had to lose
Such a ray of light we never knew
***A/N: I'm sorry.***
Brooklyn, as she usually was after school, was glued to the infant's bedside. "You know, Mase, I aced my test from the other day. I think you're a good luck charm. You kind of look like bad luck on the outside, and I bet a lot of people would see you that way, but I don't think so. I think you'll get better. I know you hurt a lot right now but it's okay. We all hurt every now and then. I guess you're just getting it out of the way early. Not usually what happens but I guess it's good that you won't remember it. I'd love to stay here and chat but I bet Mom or Dad want a turn and I have another test to study for so-" Just as Brooklyn was about finish the monitor began to beep and the floor sprang into action. She looked up and watched his vitals plummet.
Hearing the monitor begin to beep, Brooklyn found herself frozen. Stoic. She couldn't will herself to pick up her feet. She watched in horror as the professionals in the room began their work. Brooklyn had seen a code before, but this time it was different. Somehow she found herself thinking of the end rather than willing for another beginning. She wasn't sure what caused her to feel this way, she knew it was wrong, but watching the newborn suffer was something Brooklyn couldn't bare to see any longer.
Her trance was broken for just a moment as she saw Addison burst into the room. "Some get her out of here!" Brooklyn heard in command. She was going to move herself but her feet remained glued to the floor until she was pushed out by a nurse. She watched through the window silently. No adrenaline pumped through her veins she just watched. Ignoring the intensity of the situation completely. Addison looked up and made eye contact with her before a nurse quickly turned around a shut the blinds. Leaving her standing alone. Feet still unmoved. Unable to see anything she broke herself from the state she was in and found her parents. She didn't mention what she saw as she didn't want to worry them.
Soon enough, Addison showed up and led the small family into a nearby empty room. Brooklyn knew that the news Addison was about to relay was anything but good.
The room fell silent. The young brunette saw everyone still talking to her but heard nothing. Her world crumbled before her as the words entered her ears. "Despite our best efforts..." She knew what that meant. She'd spent half her life in hospitals, she knew those words meant the worst. He didn't make it. She'd tried to prepare herself for that moment throughout the past week but news like that was something no one could prepare for. Brooklyn stood up and excused herself.
The girl lost herself in her thoughts. She sat in the waiting room thinking about what this meant. She sat thinking about the life he could have had. She would never see him growing up. He would never walk or talk. He would never ride a bike, or go to school. There were so many things he was going to miss out on. Many good things, Brooklyn couldn't help but imagine. It pained her to think that he spent the entirety of his very short life fighting. But something eased her knowing that he would never feel a pain like this. He met physical pain, but he wouldn't feel emotional pain and that somehow helped her.
"Brooklyn..." Addison came up to the girl sitting alone. "I'm sorry."
Brooklyn kept looking straight ahead. She didn't want to blame Addison, she knew it wasn't her fault but she needed someone to blame. Someone to be mad at. A real reason for her pain. "I-You said he was getting better.." She mumbled as she slowly adjusted her eyes to meet the redhead's. "I thought you said he was getting better."
