"We're home," Seungcheol called out as he, his siblings, and Jeonghan stepped into Jeonghan's house. The four of them took off their shoes and walked to their rooms to put down their backpacks.
"Jeonghan! You're home! Guess what came in the mail today?" Jeonghan's mom sang, stepping into the doorway of Seungcheol and Jeonghan's room. She waved an envelope in the air.
"What is it?" Jeonghan asked as he tried to grab it from his mother's hand. Jeonghan's mother laughed and moved the envelope away from her son.
"Guess first!" Jeonghan's mother teased. Jeonghan pouted at her adorably, and Seungcheol screamed internally. How could Mrs. Yoon not give in to that face? Seungcheol knew that he would've.
After a few more minutes of playing around with him, Jeonghan's mother finally decided to hand Jeonghan the letter. Jeonghan snatched it from her eagerly, throwing his mother a playful glare before opening the envelope.
Or rather, he tried to open it. Seungcheol sighed as Jeonghan struggled with the envelope. He rolled his eyes and eventually decided to take matters into his own hands. Seungcheol grabbed the envelope from Jeonghan and carefully tore it open, handing it back to Jeonghan exasperatedly.
"Thanks," Jeonghan muttered with a blush. Seungcheol nodded silently.
Seungcheol watched as Jeonghan read through the letter. When he was done reading it, Jeonghan looked up, his eyes substantially wider than they had been before and shining with delight. Seungcheol wondered what could've been in that letter to make Jeonghan so happy.
"Mom! I won third place in that competition I entered!" Jeonghan exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear. Jeonghan's mother cheered and hugged him tightly.
"Competition?" Seungcheol pondered out loud.
"I entered a singing competition a while back, and I guess I placed in the top three! I really can't believe it!" Jeonghan told him, still smiling brightly. Seungcheol smiled at Jeonghan and held his hand up for a high five.
"Congrats," Seungcheol said.
Jeonghan's smile grew even bigger as he saw Seungcheol's outstretched hand (how was that even possible?), and he clasped the older boy's hand, lacing their fingers together. Seungcheol blushed and turned his face away, letting go of Jeonghan's hand just before Jeonghan and his mother broke apart.
"We have to celebrate this! Let's go out for dinner tonight. Where do you want to go?" Jeonghan's mother asked. Jeonghan looked at Seungcheol expectantly, and Seungcheol responded with a small scowl.
"Don't look at me like that. This is for you, not me," Seungcheol scolded Jeonghan. Jeonghan frowned.
"Anywhere's fine, Mom. We don't even have to go out," Jeonghan said.
"Nonsense! How about that Japanese restaurant, hm?" Jeonghan's mom suggested. Jeonghan sighed.
"Fine, whatever."
"Wonderful! We'll leave in a few hours. Dress up nicely, you two!" Jeonghan's mother called as she left their room and shut the door behind her. The two of them stood there awkwardly, unsure of what to do.
"Um, so you sing then?" Seungcheol questioned. Jeonghan nodded enthusiastically.
"I have ever since I was young! I really enjoy it!" Jeonghan responded. Seungcheol nodded.
"I see," Seungcheol said. Suddenly, he had an idea. He walked over to his backpack, took off one of the keychains on it, and handed it to the younger.
"What's this?" Jeonghan inquired, lightly tracing his thumb over the keychain.
"It's a keychain I got a long time ago. Sorry, I don't really have anything else on me, but it's the only thing that I could quickly think of that I have that's related to music in some way," Seungcheol explained. Jeonghan's eyebrows shot up.
"Wait, is this for me?" Jeonghan asked. Seungcheol nodded.
"I guess you can call it a congratulatory gift of sorts? I don't know. Sorry it's not much. I'll take it back if you don't want it," Seungcheol bitterly remarked, reaching a hand out to snatch the keychain back. Jeonghan moved his hand away.
"No! Sorry, I was just confused. I do want this. Thank you so much. It's really pretty," Jeonghan said, smiling at the older boy as a light blush spread across his face. Seungcheol nodded as he felt his own face heat up.
"No problem," Seungcheol replied. "Um, right, then I'll just..." He pointed at the door.
"Oh...right. Okay." Jeonghan murmured, and Seungcheol ran out of the room.
Seungcheol slapped his cheeks lightly when he was outside. What was wrong with him? His crush was getting way out of hand. Seungcheol sighed softly, and his mouth pulled into a smile. At least Jeonghan had liked his gift.
