Bucky awoke the next morning feeling surprisingly better than he had when he fell asleep, after a night of whimpering and crying, wishing that Steve had been there to hold him.

Sure, he still felt like that, but it had felt good to let the emotions leak out.

The music was now softly playing a jazz song that he recognized. It must have been back from the 40s.

Bucky sat up and stretched, yawning.

His eyes widened when he saw Steve sitting at the end of his bed.

Bucky let out a little yell, a little higher pitched than he wanted, and blushed a crimson shade.

Steve let out a little chuckle. "Sorry, Buck. Just wanted to check on ya. " He stood up from where he sat.

"Why? " Bucky asked, standing up from the bed himself, trying to avoid the subject of last night.

Steve looked at the carpeted floor. "Well, last night you didn't seem so hot. And I saw the pancakes that you made in the garbage? Did you-" he paused. "Did your date stand you up? "

Bucky stood with his mouth open, dumbfounded. "I, uh-huh, well no, she called. Said she couldn't make it. " He shrugged as he lied. "No big deal. Was just some dame. "

The blonde placed his hand on his friend's shoulder. "Aw, Buck, I'm sorry. "

Bucky just nodded, pulling on a grey sweatshirt. "No big deal. Hey, why's your house always so cold? "

Steve chuckled. "Well it's cold outside today. I'll probably turn on the heater later. "

"You do that. " Bucky said as he ran his fingers through his tousled hair.

"Wish you didn't throw the pancakes out, we could've had 'em for breakfast. "

We could have had them last night, Bucky thought grumpily.
"Your loss. " he said instead, though. "Weren't that good anyways. "

He headed out of the room and plopped down on the sofa. "How was your date with Sharon? " Bucky asked, trying to keep his voice from breaking as he said the woman's name.

Steve smiled at the mention of her, and Bucky's heart felt like it had just been punched.

"It was. . . Great! " Steve said happily. "We went out to dinner, and then we went for a walk, then back to her apartment, then we-" He stopped himself and blushed. "Ah, well, you don't want to know all the details. "

Bucky's eyes widened in horror for a millisecond, then he stopped himself and forced a cheeky smile. "America's Golden Boy, eh? Havin' a night with an actual woman. " He tried not to sound too angry when he said it.

Steve blushed as red as a Valentine and looked down. He looked back up, the smile wiped from his face. "I need to ask you something serious, Buck. "

Yes, I do love you, Steve, Bucky immediately thought, then retorted himself for even thinking it. He managed a grim smile. "Sure pal, anything. "

His friend took a deep breath before smiling and looking at Bucky.

Bucky felt his heart hopelessly flutter.

"I think I want to marry Sharon. "
