Her name was Oasis Kai Evans, and she was sick of being the oddball in life. She was that black girl who was always stuck in between. Oasis is always underappreciated and taken for granted. At school in the morning, nobody would want to talk to her...
"Wake up, sleepyhead!" Max began to throw pillow after pillow at me as I tried to dodge them.

"Okay, okay, I'm awake! What is wrong with you?" I sat up in the bed and covered my breasts with the sheets.
"A lot of things, trust me." He climbed back into the bed and wrapped his arms around me.
"Why are we here?" I suddenly questioned.
"Because I like you," he said honestly.
"And why do you like me?"
"You remind me of me."
"I'm not sure whether I should be flattered or offended," I said jokingly.
Max laughed for a second. "Oasis, I'm serious. You're just as confused and weird as me. And that's rare. You're a rare gem. No even better, a diamond in the rough."
"Maybe to you because I'm the first black girl you've slept with," I stated.
"Oasis, it's not like that, I promise. I'm colorblind, I don't see race." He kissed my hand.
"As nice as that sounds, you can't afford not to. Not in the society we live in, not in 2016, and definitely not around here."
Max nodded. "Hey, I have a serious question for you."
"Well? What is it?"
"What's it like being black?" He looked into my eyes.
"It's an educational experience. When you're black, you have to learn at a young age that this world simply will not accept you. The world will make fun of you, hate you, and dislike you because of who you are. But, if taught properly, you fall in love with your blackness. Your culture becomes a huge part of who you are, and you grow proud of it too. And when that happens, you wouldn't change a thing for the world. Not this hair, this skin, this complexion, nothing."
"Damn, that was beautiful. That was poetic as hell."
"Aw, thank you!"
"You're welcome. You know if we have a child you have to tell them all the deep stuff you just said, right?"
"We aren't even a couple why would we have a child? And haven't you already gotten that other girl pregnant?"
"No," he scoffed, "she attempted to trap me by lying about the baby being mine. I'm not the father."
