Her name was Oasis Kai Evans, and she was sick of being the oddball in life. She was that black girl who was always stuck in between. Oasis is always underappreciated and taken for granted. At school in the morning, nobody would want to talk to her...

"I just called, to say I love you, I just called, to say how much I care!" Rafael sung into the phone.
"Rafael," I laughed, "you can't keep calling me, you're going to get me in trouble!"
During the work day, Rafael's favorite way of cheering me up was to call me on my office phone and to start singing. He would sing any kind of popular love song you could think of from Remember The Time by Michael Jackson to Sherry by The Four Seasons. I thought it was adorable but his singing voice was usually off key and too high pitched.
"So what? It's worth the trouble," I could hear him laugh.
"Okay, but did you call to just sing to me or speak to me about something important?"
"Yeah, what time is your lunch break?"
"12:00. So basically now."
"So would you mind if I treated you to lunch today?"
"I would love it but isn't your lunch break at 1:00?"
"Yeah, but I don't care. I wanna spend time with you. Best friend." He put a lot of emphasis on those last two words.
Rafael was a completely different story from Max. Rafael was more mature and had an alpha male personality. There was a dominance about him that Max never seemed to have. I guess that was because Rafael had lived longer, seen more, and took his time growing. I wasn't going to admit this to him, but he had a lot to teach me and I was willing to learn.
"But, I'll meet you in your office in five after I finish up with this last person okay?"
"Okay." I hung up.
"Are you and Raf dating?" a girl who was strolling down the hallway stopped to question me. I had never seen her before around here, maybe she was new.
"No. Him and I are good friends, that's all."
"Oh, what a shame. You two would look really nice together." She kept on walking.
Um thank you? I don't even have the slightest clue of who she was! That's Ethereal Magazine for you, staying informed since day one.
"What did Veronica want?" Rafael came into the office holding his car keys and what he referred to as his, "man purse" (I have no idea why he needed to gender specify it).
"That's who that is? I've never seen her around before."
"She's my apprentice. She's in school for cosmetology so I'm helping her out."
