it was two- seventeen in the morning on the elevator ride back up to floor sixty seven, the white bunk mess hall floor. The rest of tge white bunk populatiin sleeping in there assinged rooms or just now returning from the games.the secret enclave meeting with the eight close inmates near the phone, the others went back to the large clump of maggies groups, and devided them into smaller groups among them selfs for there parts. Bruce and i crawled back thru the enclave tunnle and slde into a elevator, the plan was in motion, everyone was in a certain place or group. it would work.
"why didn't you tell them?" his voice broke thru my thoughts. i took a moment to gather my scattered thoughts, before finding my voice hidden away in the back.
"about what?"
"about the adults, that they know something is going to happen?" Bruce whispered from his seated place across the elevatro from me. his arm raised, as his long pale fingers outlined the scratched outline of the star on the botton panle. i sat on the floor across from him, his feet touching my ankles.
"the adults always know something Bruce" i stated bluntly dropping my gaze, only to raise it again.
"you know what i mean" He answered in a flat tone.
"i didn't want them to kill you" words fell from between my teeth without even thinking. Drag, what is he doing to me?
"Clare" he pressed, turning his tried gaze to me. that was it, i could not lie, just not when he was looking at me. not to him.
"why didn't you just tell them, that the adults know something is going to happen? why not warn them?" he repeated dropping his hand from the panle. now it was my turn to look away, i looked down to my hands. such strange hands, they looked the same, very much the same, but they held such a different meaning then hands should.
"it was better to lie to them, they would of freaked out and lost confidence in themselves to make the plan work"
"but now if something happens. . . your putting all that pressure on your self, you don't have to do that to yourself, Clare"
"yes i do."
"why?"he asked bluntly.
"Because you cant. Its my burden, mine. Because if you take this burden and something does go wrong, i know you'll fall apart, and i need you their to not fall part, because if you do, i will too" i whispered. i heard him move, and shift as i felt arms rap around my sore shoulders. i looked up to see him kneeling in front of me, my head shoved into his chest. the smell of him, over taking my nose, blocking out the smell of white bunk chemical air.
"that's not your call Clare"
"that's never your call. you don't know what i can and can not handle, you don't get to control everything."
". . .im sorry" a moment of silence passed, as if we both were trying to gather our thoughts. both heads separated by many things and events coming in the near future that could shift everything in our lives.
"i told."
" i already told Maggie before we left" i pushed away from him, in a moment of shock.
". . . w-what?" i sputtered, taken off guard by his choice of words. As if a invisible force had just punched the back of my brain, knocking the gears out of place.
"i told Maggie" he stated with a shrug of his wide boney shoulders, as if it wasn't a big deal.
". . .you what? I'm sorry. I don't think I'm hearing this right. . . You did what!?" i repeated. it took me a moment to process what my ears were taking in.
