Chapter 4

The school Hall had totally transformed from dead and dreary to glam fairy. The stage, which normally holds a microphone that the Head uses to scream into during assembly, now held the weight of a DJ booth run by Shaun Diggs, the schools closest thing to a rap artist. Shaun is awesome! Last semester, he taught Al how to 'spin on the decks' as he called it. Kind of him, since Al was going throug a phase of Jay Z , Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Not really a phase actually. She wasn't so much into the music, but into the guy behind it. Al had a major crush on Shaun's best friend ,Kyle who is really into rap music. I think Shaun was more into Al than helping her get his friend. You can imagine how that worked out. It didn't.  I felt Haley squeeze my hand, i looked over to see what she was smiling about. It was then that i spotted Mario Khan. Haley and Mario had been hooking up since Freshman year but they were never serious until now. they had made this their first date and I was happy for her. She really had it for him.

"Honey," she yelled above the music," do you mind if I leave you for a few?"

I felt like splitting up was not a good idea. Standing alone would just make me feel like a loser but I couldn't spoil her first date.

"Oh sure, sure, go ahead I'll be right here," I shooed her away.

I watched as she walked into his arms. Their hug lasted so long, I wondered why they aren't chemistry partners because that reaction was explosive. I longed for a connection like that. I saw Mario glance up at me through his shaggy brown hair.

"Hey!" he yelled at me with a huge grin on his face. Whenever he and Haylz we're together, I was the third wheel.

I waved at him and glanced around the rooms taking the beauty of it all in.

The different aromas, perfume and cologne mixed together, flashing lights bouncing off the disco ball, dancing bodies clustered together. I looked around for an empty seat but the only one available was at a table filled with girls gossiping among themselves. Their criticism was so quiet but so loud: Is she really wearing that! where did they disappear to? did she honestly ask HIM? more giggles. I took the seat next to Jané.

"Paigeeyyy, its been forever, you look amazing!" her tone sounded sincere but her criticism rang out.

"Thanks Jané, you look stunning," I said taking a good look at her. She was short and lean. Her brown hair framed her face and her smile gleamed at me.

I glanced around the table Camelia and Katiya stared me down.

"Hi, I'm Kat this is Camy, " she said extending her hand out to me.

"I know, we're in the same homeroom," I said accepting her gesture.

"Oh silly me, " she said brushing her long locks over her shoulder.

Katiya has the beauty of a model, with her light brown hair and big, brown eyes. Camy resembled a mouse, her features were small, tiny nose, little lips but beautiful hazel eyes. They were Jané's clique. Highly influenced by Jané, sometimes her influences weren't so much for their benefit but for hers. She was a stunner but afraid of competition but unlike Katiya and Camy, she was single and to her that had to change, with that thought in mind :

"So," I said in an attempt at conversation," who are your dates?"

"Urgh, I came with him," she said pointing in the direction of tall, boy with short hair. From far, he looked dark mysterious, the kind of guy out of a novel then I looked closer, he was laughing. he's smile was contagious, I grinned. I had never seen him before.

"Oh, why aren't you together?" I asked.

Kat stole a glance at Jané, I saw her nod.

"Well he's my ex," she said," Jané overheard him talking to her date, badmouthing me!"

She was gaping in horror as if the mere idea of it disgusted her.

"Jané said I should let him go, and she's usually right so 'bye bye baby'," she did a little wave.

I couldn't help noticing the influence Jané had in this story, something was totally up. I waved my hunch off.

"And you?" I smiled at Camy.

"Dumped the dude this morning, he was a total geek." she rolled her eyes.

Jané laughed," total geek deviant, my ass, he was a sophomore!"

Camy blushed," one time thing, okay!"

I looked over Katiya's shoulder at Haley and Mario, at Al and Paul. Dancing and laughing. They were happy. My heart ached for that happiness.
