Chapter 15
I woke up to the sound of Haley's ringing phone. Nicki Minaj soared through the speakers that were oh so dangerously close to my ear. I glanced at the screen - Allison.
I answered, "hello?" my voice seeping into that morning voice everyone talks about. Apparently it's supposed to be sexy, mine was nothing to compare. Oh wait, isn't that comparison for boys only? Oh well.
"Paige?" Al asked, she sounded unsure, "You're with Haley?"
Relief dripped from her tone, it had been only two days since Al and I last spoke.
"yeah," I couldn't force my brain to process any more information so I kept my answers short, maybe not sweet but short.
"I'm coming over, I have a problem," panic was evident in her last few words. She hung up before I could protest. I looked at the digital clock in the corner of the screen : half past eight, Oh you've got to be kidding me.
Sleep and I are Ying and Yang, but of late my love for sleep as been replaced by my love for......Well , my love for friendship.
Yeah, that's it,
Haley was sprawled all over my side of the bed. I shook her violently in an attempt to wake her up.
When that failed, "HALEY GET UP!"
And with that, she jolted awake, her eyes sprung open and her arms flew up as a reflex, she was ready for action. I laughed.
"Al is coming over, but listen," I say choosing my words wisely. Saying the wrong thing would set off suspicion," She can't know about Sage. Not yet, she said shes having problems and I don't want her getting worked up over him, okay?"
I looked into her eyes, watching the realization of my words wash over her face.
"Got it, no Sage."
A sigh of relief begged to make itself known. I shooed it away, smiling instead. Getting up, I walked over to the bathroom, I readied myself for a shower when she said," Paige, you can't hide him away forever,"
"Give me some time, I need to figure out what our friendship is before I let the world in on my life."
She nodded, knowing that I meant telling Al and my mom would compromise my friendship with Sage. If anyone knew about how inquisitive those two could be, it was Haley.
Last semester, Haley had asked my mother and father if they would interrogate Mario, just because she didn't trust her own parents with the job. My mothers stern face, and fathers unchanging grimace would have been enough to send Mario screaming in terror, but that was when Haylz knew he was a keeper. He stood his ground until my mother had practically asked him into an oblivion. Al had reacted the same way, questioning him to death, Poor guy. I'm not sure my friendship with Sage is strong enough for him to meet 'The Family'. So I need to play it down for a bit. Haley understood that.
I was still in the shower when I heard the door bell ring. Assuming Haley would get it, I carried on lathering my hair with shampoo. Stepping out of the shower, I towel-dried my hair, letting my curls hang around my face. I swung a towel around my body, covering all of the necessary, and walked into the room drying my face.
"Uhhh Paige," Haley's words were nervous but only when I removed the towel from my face did I realize why.
"Sage!" I exclaimed, jumping back behind the bathroom door, "What are you doing here and why are you in my room?!"
I was very demanding but I can't say I wasn't glad to see his face beaming at me. I flushed red with embarrassment.
"You, you-you, I,I just....like...no...I'm just, but I... and YOU," I was mumbling.
OH. MY. GOSH.
"Woaah, Princess in a towel," he had placed his hand over his eyes, pretending to block the view," Scandalous!"
Haley was having great difficulty holding her laugh back. Why had she let me in?
"Listen, I need to change and you need to leave."
"Feel free, its not like I haven't seen it all before," his words slapped me. Hard.
"Sage, you did not-" Haley seemed shocked, our expressions we're that of The Scream.
"Kidding, ladies," he said rolling his eyes behind his hand.
How did I know he was rolling his eyes? Simple, his hand wasn't completely cupped.
When I finally convince him to leave the room long enough for me to change, I threw a dirty look at Haley.
"Allison will be here soon, and you let him in!" I tried my best to whisper, knowing that he was sitting on the staircase just outside my door.
"He let himself in, apparently the door was unlocked." her eyes were large and defensive.
"The bastard picked the lock!" I threw my hands up in frustration.
Quickly changing into a pair of jeans and a white tank top with my Tommies, I reached for my phone that I had placed on my dressing table and turned it on.
Haley called Sage back in.
"So, what's going on?" I ask, trying not to be rude but at the same time searching for answers.
"Soccer," He smiled at me, I had forgotten that he would be forcing me into this.
"I told you I can't, Allison is coming over," I explained, pouting ever so slightly, trying to get some sympathy.
"Okay," he said touching the tip of his finger to my bottom lip, " but I'm coming to get you at 8, tonight we are going to watch the game."
What the?
" the game?" I asked, what was he talking about?
"Soccer, Princess, get with the programme!" He was standing now, looking down at me with his hands placed on my shoulders. He's losing it, i thought to myself.
"My mother will be home by six," I said trying to cancel his plans.
"You're going to Taylor's house, I've already taken the liberty of asking him to call your mother."
I looked at him, shock had paralyzed me, he cannot be serious, can he?
Apparently he can, sighing he continued, " Taylor told her you were coming over to watch the game with us, all part of this bonding crap."
He dismissed the idea of bonding with Taylor by waving his hand, chasing away a fly.
"Any other plans i don't know about?" My voice was harsh, I was annoyed.
"There's the school's annual Shopping Under The Stars on Thursday night," His face was smug, "We're going, Princess."
This "Princess" crap , needs to stop. Twas cute before but now I'm seriously irritated.
He noticed this, "Something wrong?"
"Don't call me Princess," I snapped at him. He looked taken aback for a second but it turned into a smirk.
"You should have thought about that when you were trying on that tiara last week," and with that, my jaw dropped.
"See you later Princess," he winked at me and stepped out of the room.
He was at CarrTryt Mall the afternoon of the dance. Looking for dresses, the girls and i went into Forever21. There were tiaras everywhere, celebrating the occasion. The town is very small so something as big as a dance really causes a stir.
Haley, Al and I had taken pictures in the tiaras. But I had no idea that anyone saw us.
But he had, and he noticed me.
