Chapter 18

The limo pulled to a stop after 30minutes of driving. You would have thought that a bunch of teenagers would have passed out by now, but everyone was just.....Hyper and happy, and that was definitely a side effect of the booze. As we climbed out of the limo gasps were sounded and shrill giggles came from the girls. Excitement filled the atmosphere. I was the last one out and as I shut the door, I felt a slight tap on my shoulder. It was Daniel.

"Hey, are you okay?" he sounded sincere and not in the least bit intoxicated even though he smelt like a local bar.

"Yeah," I sighed, still facing the car door.

"Natasha is actually really nice once you get to know her," his voice was lower and somewhat embarrassed.

"By that you mean, 'she's a bitch but you'll get used to it', right?" I said turning to face him but looking right past him into the distance.

Water, everywhere. I recognised the lake from pictures my parents had taken on their first date so many years ago. Nothing had changed, and it was just as beautiful now, if not even more. I barely heard Daniel laugh and pass approving comments as he staggered away from me into Allison's open arms. They embraced themselves in one another and then walked, hand in hand, towards to lake. I sighed, feeling my heart sink, as I followed behind them.

All of the couple's were seated around the bon fire that was waiting to be lit by Tom who was standing near it, fumbling with the matches, praying ,audibly, that he doesn't lose his hair or eyelashes and brows to the flames. When he finally managed to get it going, Daniel and the driver were seen carrying cooler boxes and crates, boxes and packets, from the limo. Setting them down on a table near the fire. From the packages came sweets and chocolates and foods of all sorts. The crates were filled with alcohol and the cooler boxes with chasers. Had I known this would be a beer fest, I wouldn't have come but I know how much my being here means to Al.

I glanced at my watch, it was 9 and our curfew was 12, 3hours was not going to be enough for these two.

I hated myself for being such a good friend.

Scrambling for my phone, I dialed Al's mother.

"Hey Mrs Rouge, the party has barely started, and I know this is asking for alot... but please can we drop the curfew? Just this once?"I crossed my fingers, hoping for the best. Mrs R and I go way back, she used to get me out of trouble when I couldn't tell my parents the situation. Like this one time, I went to my friend, Andy's, birthday party after my mother strictly forbid me, she thought that Andy was a bad influence, and I told her I was studying with Al. When she called their house to check up on us, Mrs R caught on to the plan and covered for me. Since then, we've had each others backs. She's diabetic and her husband is really strict on what she eats, so I give her chocolate when she's craving, and she helps me out during times like this. We have a very solid and healthy relationship.

"Paige, I can't do that," her voice sounded strong but I couldn't take no for an answer. Al and Haley would need to pay me back and I have undone assignments with their names on them.

"Please," I begged, throwing the puppy dog into my voice," I have a box of you-know-what's with your name on it!"

There was no response for nearly 5seconds, and then came a sigh.

"Be home by 3am, no later." she said before cutting the call.

I love this woman. I do, I really do.

I walked towards the group, searching for Haley and Al. They were on the further bend of the circle. I made my way over to them, and thankfully, they were sitting together. I told them the good news and they agreed on doing "anything, absolutely anything!" for me. I just had to name it.
