Chapter 22
An Ice Rink?
No.
"Yes, an ice rink," he said to my slip up.
He grabbed me by the arm and steered me towards the entrance after making sure our parked cars were locked.
We stepped through the first door that opened up to the ticket booths, and directly infront of us was a glass door that gave off the view of the snowy beauty. The rink was huge, and buzzing with teenage couples. Some who spun circles around their partners, and others who used each other as a balance-system.
I had heard the rink would be opening soon, but this information was almost a month old and of course I was so behind. It looked brand new, and I could smell the fresh paint of the walls. I looked over at Sage who was paying for our entrance and skates.
"What size?" a girl shorter than me stood behind the counter, staring at me with her hazel eyes meeting my stunned expression. She was breath-taking. She raised her eyebrow slightly at my silence before elaborating, thinking I didn't understand.
"I need your shoe size, girly," her eyes widened as she emphasized her words, using her head as well shaking it momentarily making her death-black bob swish from side to side of her face.
" Sage, do you ever bring home a normal one?" she turned her gaze to him, revealing her pearly white teeth, "She's so-"
"Enough, Claire." he gave her a look matching her hair colour. With that, she stuck out her tongue. Showing off the miniature golf ball on a tee in the middle of the pink field.
"Uh, " I muttered, regaining my thinking skills, " sorry, size 7."
Claire stepped away from the counter and through the back door leading to what I'd assumed to be where they kept the skates.
She reappeared only minutes later with two pairs.
"There you go, Barbie," she beamed at me while placing the skates before me," Make sure they're on right and tight, try not to fall because the blisters hurt like a b-"
"Oooh okay, let's go before she scares you off," Sage stopped her, yet again, spinning me on my heel and directing me through the glass door and down the stairs that lead to firm ground before the rink itself.
"Just like the other one!" she yelled from behind us, causing Sage to snicker uncontrollably.
We stepped through and the icy feel of the room crept up my bare arms. I shuddered. To the left were stands that were made of cement and most likely part of the wall towered from the floor straight the the roof. The room was enormous and the stands surrounded the rink on the left side stopping by the sign : TOILETS. Which were two corridors. Directly next to the sign stands a food store, selling drinks and food. The rest of the way around was a pathway .Around the ice was a short wall that reached well above knee length, maybe below the waist a little. While walking towards the stands with Sage, I noticed a small gap after every 10meters to enable the exit for people.
"What was that about?" curiosity built up inside of me after leaving Claire.
"What was what about?" he scrunched his face up in confusion. I giggled at the sight.
"Claire?" I said, waiting for an explanation. He sat down and began to tug his shoes off and replace them with ice skates, I did the same.
"Oh, she's friends with my little sister." he shrugged, as if he had mentioned of the faint member before.
"You have a little sister?" I asked, warmth spreading through my body. I always wanted a little sister but of course my mother refused. After my parents split and my father moved away with my two sisters, my heart had been deprived of sisterly love. They were older than I by many years but that didn't mean our love wasn't the strongest kind.
