Chapter 13
There was a knock at the door, and then Haley appeared in the lounge. It was just after 6 and i had gotten home at 5:55pm. My mom had left a note saying dinner was in the fridge and Haley and i would make a plan for breakfast. That she would be home by 6pm tomorrow and she loved us both. I had collapsed on the beige carpet in the centre of the lounge when i arrived and i hadn't moved since.
"What are you doing?" Haley gaped at me, her eyes bulging out.
"Life is so beautiful," i managed to say through my memory of the day.
"Oh my gosh, " she let out a sigh of relief," i thought you had a heartattack and couldn't move or something!"
I got up off the floor," you're ridiculous!" I laughed at Haley and took her bag up to my room.
When I returned to the lounge, Haley was gone. I could hear her rummaging through the fridge.
"Hungry?" I suggested, leaning against the door. She had found the pizza my mom had left for us.
"Starving!" she cried, grabbing the box and making her way up to my room.
"Ill be right up," I called to her. I decided it was best to lock up to house just in case we fell asleep. As i was about to lock the last door, the front one, there was a knock. I opened the door, and there stood Sage. I froze.
"Hey," he smiled, with his hands in his pocket. His signature pose.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded, shoving him out of the house afraid that Haley would see or hear him.
"You left this behind," he held my phone out to me," I picked it up as you drove away. Just figured you might need it to talk to your best friend."
"Oh my gosh! Thank you," I gave him a grateful hug and held on for a while. His hugs were magic, I always felt safe and happy in his arms.
"Paige?" Haley's voice came from over my shoulder and she sounded confused. Startled, i jumped backward.
"Uh," i tried to gather my words, " Haley, this is my friend, Sage."
"Nice to meet you? What is he doing here?" Haley has always been curious and i was hoping she wouldn't ask anymore questions.
"I came to drop off her phone, and to join the sleepover," He answered for me, and stepped into the house.
"Great, ill get the pizza." Haley shot me a quizzical look but i turned away.
I lead Sage into the lounge and we sat on the two-seated chair.
"Sage, this is a really bad idea." i said, just above a whisper.
"Come on, what are you so scared of?" he was clueless. But now wasn't the time to explain, Haley walked into the room.
"So why have i never met you?" Haley had started her interrogation:
Sage: Maybe you weren't looking for me.
Haley: How do you know Paige?
Sage: She's my bestfriend (I smiled)
Haley: Sorry, that position is filled!
This is where i step in, "Haley, I've been needing to talk to you,"
"Well I'm listening," her arms were folded across her chest. Something told me that she would hear but not listen to what i had to say.
"Sage and I met at the dance, we've become really close since then. You're my sister and so is Al and you mean the world to me but I feel like we need to move on a bit," I was completely lost for words, this was so unexpected.
"What she means to say," Sage stepped in probably sensing my unease, " is that even though you girls have been friends for most of your lives-"
"Babies in diapers." Haley added, her arms still crossed.
"-okay, since you were running around naked," he continued, accepting Haley's addition," but you girls are growing up and it's time to accept new members into your clique. To make new friends, meet new people! You start college soon and I doubt you'll be in the same one."
Haley seemed to accept his words, her arms dropped and she sat down on the chair opposite ours.
Sage carried on," she's not replacing you Haylz, she's just finding a way to adjust to not being with you and Allison all the time."
Haley looked as if tears were her next resort," are you breaking up with me?" she sobbed and i moved to sit next to her, my arms around her shoulders in an attempt to console her.
"Of course not, it's just that you don't understand but when i find a way to explain, i will. I promise" i kissed a falling tear away from her cheek.
"So i guess I'll be seeing a lot more of you," she smiled at Sage.
"I guess you will," he returned the smile. Then i realized that the best feeling on the world is having two of your friends accept eachother for what they mean to you.
I smiled too.
